Maryland Fig Review - 2014 - Prepping for Winter

Rob, don't feel bad I have only had main crop figs from Florea which started about 3 days ago.  They are good but I haven't gotten very many off my young tree.  My other varieties do not seem very close at all to ripening. I'm not growing Celeste (well, Improved Celeste but it is too young to fruit) or Conadria.  I suspect most of it has to do with the characteristics of the varieties.  It's nice that Conadria is so early (and large at the same time).  I'm hoping to get some ripe Atreanos and RdBs soon...

Hi Rob n Steve

I'm definitely not doing anything special, thats for sure. The trees ARE getting a lot of sun, almost from sun rise until maybe 1400 when it dips down below our back trees. The pots are smaller, drip irrigation daily at 1100 for 30 minutes. A few weeks ago pinched back all the stems on all the trees, including my in ground ones. I think that might have hurried things along and helped.

They are calling for a ton of rain tomorrow so I went and picked a few of the softest morsels. Here are a few snaps prior to picking.

We received a TON of rain today, our back garden is flooded, but all the figs and trees look good. Should be able to start picking the ripe ones again on Thursday. I actually put a time delay on my drip irrigation system.

Greetings, a record amount of rain fell yesterday in Maryland. Seemed good for all the grass, trees and my fig trees. A few that were almost ripe swelled up and I picked those today. Main crop are coming in!

Thanks god  Mark you didn't get the flooding, my heart goes out to all the stranded and those that lost their vehicles. Congrats and hopefully you will have a successful main crop.

Greetings all, especially Steve in Rockville

Last year Steve and I had some DC beltway trades, and in one of those he provided a yearling Longue d'Aout. I transplanted it and nurtured it along all last year, over wintered in our unheated sunroom along with all others and brought him out with the others this Spring. A bit of MG in the Spring and it has grown quite well, pushing nice long figs at every leaf node. We now have one giant fig from this tree ready to pick probably tomorrow, before the ants get it, but i wanted to snap and share a few pix while it's still hanging on the tree enjoying this fine sunny August day.

And, the Brown Turkey turned out pretty nice this year. Last year not so much, but this one was a whopper and tasted wonderful.

Hardy Chicago are tasting pretty nice as well. Thought I would pick these four before the ants discovered them first.

Mark, glad the LdA is doing well for you.  Did you taste a LdA fig yet?  Were you able to get the CdDN cuttings to take?

On the other side of the beltway the main crops figs that have ripened for me are Florea and Bari (both containerized).  RdB and Atreano are getting close...

Hey everyone, since it's all marylanders here I thought I'd join the party. I just had my very first ripe fig off a tree ... EVER!!! supposedly it's an Egyptian Pharoah from bill up in Pennsylvania who has the "off the beaten path nursery". It was extremely delicious, I mean, the ones from the grocery places (giant) doesn't even come close to the sweetness of it. It had a thick skin when I was opening it but it seemed to have melted in my mouth cause it didn't seem hard at all when biting on it. Haha...
I'd upload pics but I'm not sure how.

Yep! Fresh figs right from the tree are very hard to beat. We sampled a few Hardy Chicago, many Celeste, a couple Vista, a Conadria, and some Negronne today! All scrumptious!

Mark, nice set of photos and taste tests.

The LdA does look good.  Glad you were able to taste it before the rain comes!

Thanks Steve, there's another monster LDA hanging right now just begging to be picked. As large or larger than the previous one. I keep hearing these threats of rain, but nothing here. I keep forgetting to respond to your question, re CdDN cuttngs and new plants. So, i started a bunch of cuttings via the root riot method and had pretty good success with a majority. I labeled them using a grid system (1/2, 1/4, 1/7, etc) but have not transcribed those grids to my map. Crazy i know. I'm going to do a bit of potting tomorrow, and that is one of my projects.

Greetings. Found this Black Mission hiding among the leaves! Will pick later tonight and reveal the inside, but it looks great!

Here's that large LdA that i referenced earlier. Not a bad weight! A keeper for sure.

Update: so, last week I said a "keeper for sure" based purely on size and looks. Well, let me now confirm that this sure is a keeper and one to add to your collection for TASTE as well. It tastes wonderful, fruity, melony, sweet. I'm adding a pix of the insides to enjoy. Thanks Steve!

Negronne really coming into its own. Heavy rains yesterday here in Maryland, followed by rather early morning heat and humidity, they want to burst open with flavor! Very tasty!

Some Brown Turkey, Black Mission and LSU Purple as well. I see a few new Vista to capture next.
