Maryland Fig Season 2015 - Black Madeira - New Pix!

Greetings. So much for our string of 10 days with above average temperatures, weathermen today now calling for ten days BELOW average, with the mixed precip coming as well. Springtime on hold, figs in holding pattern.

Alright, enough is enough! Snow yesterday to the tune of 2 inches, a day later and we are in the low 60's. I couldnt resist, I did a bit of the fig shuffle today. My other dormant trees are all waking up as well.

They look great.  Which one has all the brebas?  There is a low of 26 predicted here tonight so my threee container figs that I up-potted recently will go back into the garage.

Steve, the fig pictured with all the brebas is my Madelline de Deux. Really quite a few pictured there, but also on many of it's other branches. MANY of our other potted figs have breba crops as well. I'll have to document which ones for our records.

I had started putting a few of my potted figs out.  But just looked at the forecast and it says it will be 21 degrees Saturday night!  I am going out of town next week and hoped to get them all out of the garage before that.  But I guess I'll wait.  No signs of bud break or brebas yet.  And I have too many to do the shuffle.

What do you guys think about Saturday night?  Safe to put the trees out before, or better to wait until after?

I have just a few out now but I don't think I'm gaining much by doing that since buds haven't broken and it might be slightly warmer in my detached garage.  The forecasts I am seeing say a low of 24-26 on Saturday night so I'll put the few that I have out back in in the garage after the sun goes down on Saturday.  After that, the forecast looks warm enough to bring everything out and hopefully not shuffle them back in again until the Fall.

Pretty warm here today , but they are talking rain, snow and sleet for tommorow night

Gretings all

This hot one day, cold for many is no good! Our figs are confused! We as keepers of the figs are confused! I had a few potted ones outside for Thursdays "hot" temps of 73f, but based on forecast of lots of rain, coupled with cold temps, I brought them back in. My outdoor bird bath formed a layer of ice! Supposed to be pretty cold again Sunday night - then warming up. Potted figs soon to go out!

Heres some quick pix of my Madeline de Deux with a ton of brebas, and my Black Madeira. The BM is from a UC Davis cutting started last year.

Looking good....Mark......

Did you use it before? What is a ratio for small potted trees?
What is your opinion about use of auxin for young trees?

Ive not used this particular product before, but have seen others on this forum hype it up, with what appears to be good success. Nice lush plant growth. I guess we'll see the results this year.

Never used any auxins, so can't comment, maybe others have and can comment.

Nice warming day guys, I did a bit of the fig shuffle this morning with about five plants, all in now as sun lowers along with the temps. Here are a few pictures.

1. Sweet Diane with nice new growth
2/3. Brebas on my young Carini, from Sicily
4/5. Brebas on the Madeline de Deux

Greetings all. Can you believe that we had a thin layer of frost this morning?! My vehicle's windscreen was fully covered in a thin layer of frost, dashboard temp read 28F! Luckily, I only moved a few outside the other day, and they were right next to house, seem unaffected. Warm day temps today, tomorrow. Yeah!

I have an unheated garage and my container figs (nor any of my in-ground figs of course) still have not broken bud.  Jeez, I hope we have a long Fall!

Ive moved all my potted figs outside today! It's too nice to keep them inside now, temps are mild and swinging up! Supposed to be close to 70 by late evening and the better part of tomorrow.

Yes, a long hot sunshine-filled Fall would be nice.

It looks like it will rain all day tomorrow and tomorrow night.  Rather than have the rain wash the fertilizer and lime out of the containers I will probably move most, if not all, back in the garage tonight and leave them there until Saturday morning.  None of them have leaves so sun really isn't an issue at this point.

Well, the day time temperatures are increasing nicely, but overnight lows continue to sink. All my potted trees that I put out the other day have been soaking in the warm sunshine, thats for sure. The breba crop is growing as well, not impacted by the cool evening temps. Today, I was able to finalize the seating arrangement on our deck for all the plants, so next big project will be to hook my drip irrigation system. Should be easier this year since I left the hoseline in place from last year. Pots were all pretty dry so today I gave them all a drink using the newly acquired MaxiGro fertilizer.

Heres a few pix: look at those brebas!

Fig trees are doing well! I think I managed to move my potted trees outside on the perfect day a few weeks ago. Since that date, we've had increasing daytime temperatures with just cool, not cold evenings. I can see growth daily in these trees, I'm amazed at the beautiful new leaves. From cold, dormant branches, to nice spring green leaves and brebas. The Madeline de Deux brebas are amazing ( at least I think so ). They continue to swell and look fantastic. Attached are some pix of Madeline's brebas - looking pretty good!

Congrats.......they look very nice .....my plants are about 3 weeks to 4 weeks behind yours ...

Wow,
Your plants look great. Did you fertilize it when it was dormant or after it broke bud?

Chad, Once the plants were outside, greening buds present, some small leaves as well, I gave them a few waterings with the MaxiGro fertilizer ref'd above. Ive fertilized them like this maybe twice or three times. Weve had a good dose of rain the last few days, so I plan to let them dry out a bit now.

One thing for sure, my plants that were over-wintered in our cold storage room are weeks, maybe a month ahead of any of the in-ground plants that went through the Winter "protected". The in-ground trees hardly breaking any bud growth.

A relatively chilly and very breezy Sunday here in Maryland and we're expecting a good rainstorm to pass through here this evening. That said, the potted figs are appreciating the semi-overcast day and are not getting "baked" in the sun. Here's a few pix of the Conandria, nice new leaves and a few breba as well. These were very large and delicious last year!

Oh man!! I just saw the weather and it does look bad. I'm in the catonsville area and the weather is going to be around 38 degrees from Thursday to sunday. I've brought out all my figs since they broke dormancy early, should I take them back in for those few days?

Habib, thats way above freezing. No reason to bring your trees back inside, especiallybwith these long warm days ahead as well. I didnt see where they are calling for that cool of overnight temps. I'll have to check. Regardless, 38f is fine.
