Every fig variety I have here in Maryland that was planted in the ground froze down to ground level last winter. New growth is emerging......slowly but it will be next year before I get fruit from the inground trees.

This is the second batch of figs I have harvested from the 18 large fig trees I keep in containers and then move them into the greenhouse each winter. Good thing I had it as a backup or I would be eating fig newtons all summer!

Will, I am also really curious about what varieties these figs are from.  I assume they are breba, correct?  Where in Maryland are you located.  Great job growing the figs!

The large figs are Brown Turkey

The green figs are Celeste

The small dark figs are Negrone

Many of the figs over wintered on the trees as small under developed figs.

I don't heat the green house over 40F during the winter just to keep it from freezing.

But, during the day even when it is below 30F outside if the sun is shining it will be about 60-70F in the green house just because of the solar gain.

The night time temps are also higher because I have an earthen floor which collects and holds a lot of heat into the night.

Once the green house during the day began to stay above 70F and not go below 55-60 at night which this year was around the end of March, the small figs began developing into what I just harvested.

Ah, greenhouse, that explains it.  By the way the green figs don't look like Celeste to me although admittedly I don't grow this variety.  You might look at Jon's recent thread "Celeste Study".  Whatever they are they look nice.
