massive roots on both ends

hi all
just saw my cutting and has massive roots on both ends. not sure what to do I was going to plant it in soil but should I cut it to get 2 plants? will an end node with roots grow? I used moss should I also wash it before I put in new medium or can I just put directly in soil..

If you cut it in half then one would be growing upside down if both are planted vertically.. not being an expert, my opinion would be to pot it right side up and let the top roots die on their own. should not take too long in the open air. Or, experiment and cut it in half, plant the top roots on its side and hopefully the node will sprout up through the potting mix. The other can be planted vertically. I would do this only if I have a surplus cuttings of this variety. You should get advice from others, interesting situation that others have experienced so you can find out what they have done. I have never had this happen since I do all rooting of cuttings in 1 gallon pots. Good luck and good growing.

Another option would be to Put the all cutting layng down in a bigger pot and next year you can cut it in half and make 2 plants. If you don't need 2 plants put it sideways anyway and just let 1 grow

Hi jaylyne...as I just started to root my first cuttings (got them from a member here), I was reading directions on rooting from the forum. Here's a link that shows a cutting actually planted upside down and doing well!:

And here are the directions I found as to rooting and then potting the young fig trees in stages of growth:

This link also explains the potting mediums that work best as the tree grows, so will probably help answer your questions.
Happy growing:)

Jaylyne, I just realized that you also bought from Wellspring, the same online nursery I ordered my group of baby fig trees from on Ebay. How was your experience with this seller? My plants arrived very small but healthy a few weeks ago. So far they are doing well, and I hope they were accurately labeled. Time will tell :)

After reading here on the forum, I realize that it's probably better and a lot faster to use cuttings, esp from reliable sources. But, I still have hopes for my little starter plants~ LJ

Most people would cup the cutting like normal and not worry about any roots above the soil line, they will air prune on their own.  Having roots start at any and all parts of the cutting is normal.

Well spring gardens is a reputable source, I have several figs and other plants from them.  Their fig trees are from tissue cultures not from cuttings (this is why they are so small), they can grow enough to fruit their first year in a good deal of the county.  If not the second year is not uncommon.

thank you guys... I planted it vertically I was just shocked to see sooo much roots on both ends..lol.
LJ... i'm in the same boat as you.. bought my plants from them first then learned about this website...  like scott said they are reliable but they are very tiny.. heard different reviews about people getting figs the first year and some had to wait a couple years. thank you for the sites and happy growing :)

Jaylyne, you ought to get a photo of the cutting with the roots coming out the top, it would be a little comical...you could even put a funny caption with it :)
Oh, i'd be so thrilled if one of mine fruited the first year; I've been babying them in the hopes that they might.

I'm glad to hear that Wellsprings Gardens is reliable. The main reason I became worried is because their photo of the Violette de Bordeaux fig doesn't look like any of the others which I have seen.

The VdB figs usually have a somewhat oval shape when cut, whereas WG's photo showed more round and differently proportioned figs. When I ordered my two VdB plants from them, I hadn't really looked at photos from other sites. The VdB was the first fig I really wanted to grow, and didn't want to mistakenly believe that's what i had.

Your cutting will probably do very well now, keep us updated!
