Masui Dolphin & Tx Everbearing eats

A couple of days ago, I noticed some large figs turning colors on my container trees, Masui Dolphin and Texas Everbearing. I bagged the TxEvB figs and Piedmonte figs. But I forgot to cover my MD figs. The birds and ants got to my MD tree except for one fig. The tree is root bound and I didn't think the figs were ready but they were. Well, here are a few pics. Tx Everbearing were to die for excellent. Figgy and sweet! MD taste to me like a cross btw a strawberry and a respberry. Blue Celeste had no taste. My TEV figs taste much better than my Brown Turkey figs.

Dennis: Very tasty figs and nice photos. I love your Texas Everbearing. Thanks for sharing. Dennis, how are your 3 Brown Turkey trees which you bought from Northern Virginia nursery last summer 2013? My potted Brown Turkey tree which was the same cultivar as your trees died past winter in a shed of my backyard. Thanks for sharing.

Best,
Tam

Your Texas Evebearing looks different than mine. Yours looks like my Brown Turkey. Here are few pics of mine from a 2-year old tree planted I'm a half whiskey barrel.

HA! I really don't think mine is a brown turkey. My BT figs are smaller, have a cavity in the center and not that sweet. Two years a go, I called and spoke with the folks at Juist Fruits and Exiots. They called and told me they have a relible source from Texas. I ordered 3 of them. The figs in your picture look exactly like my Improved Brown Turkey figs. I mean exactly! Pretty Fig!

Wow, never knew Improved Brown Turkey looks that big, but I believe you. So far, I've had about a dozen figs of mine and they're very delicious.

Dennis, could you give some info on the Masui Dolphin? I did a search and checked the varieties but found no information. Thanks.

I forgot to mention that my TxEb figs drips honey from the eye.

I got my MD from JV. Contact him for more info.

Boy do they look good!

Thanks Dennis, will do.

Dennis,
Thanks for sharing the pictures and info.
Can you please post pictures of the differing leaf morphology and the tree?
Your posted pictures and info could help to keep the ("Brown Turkey") cultivars separate and identifiable.
Thanks.

Pete, I will make an attempt to do that.  But not sure it will happen.  My tree came from JV last year in a one gallon pot.  I potted it up in a 3 gallon and it has out grown that pot already.  It was a mystery fig to me.  Heck most that Jon get are a mystery to me!  I have so many like that!  Well, I've picked 4 figs from my tree this week.  All were medium size-- bigger than HC-- a litter sweeter but not as rich as HC.

Last year, I had a coon problem and for now I can say the coons in my area have moved on or I finished off the last 4 last year.  Now, I've got a possum problem.  Every night my LSU Gold figs are disappearing and the same goes for my Marseilles Black.  The coons nest in the front yard of my neighbor's tree.  I see them early in the AM.

Like Pete said in his thread, we had a lot of rain the past week.  Most figs that I'm picking are on the watery side but sweet.  Lyndhurst White figs are ripening...picked 6 yesterday.  I had to cut the organza bag from around a fewfig.  It swole up that much inside the bag!  Its been humid here and the ground very moist.  No figs have spoiled yet and that's a good thing!  The bags that I use have a very fine mesh---this keeps the gnats out and ants too if tied tight enough.

Dennis,
Thanks for the reply.
I'm actually interested in the leaves of the Texas Everbearing.
I'm a fan of the early and productive Southeastern cultivars, LSU hybrids, Southern Brown Turkey and Heritage Celeste. This may be another cultivar to add to that list.

Pete, that Texas Everbearing that I got, has an amazing flavor and taste. And on the plus side,, it's pretty hardy. The Brown Turkey Not that I got from Wolftrap is also amazing! I am seriously considering culling down to only a certain number of trees....especially the weird name trees without a lot of information. So, what that means is, I will be selling off a lot of my trees and let the hobbyiest play with those fancy named fgs. The name Brown Turkey, Celeste and Tex Everbearing are used for the same fig. This I found is a problem. I found a tree here in Charlotte that is truly an unknown. I got a few of the trees now. It's not a brown turkey and its not a celeste. Its a fat oval shaped brown fig with a flat bottom. It's also a honey fig!

So far, I've proved that LSU Tiger, Black, Purple, and Gold are keeper trees. I've started collecting more of these.

I've pin pointed which brown turkey strains to keep. Next I will work on Black Jack and Black Spanish. BJ figs are excelent. I guess it doesn't have a fancy name for every body to like it.

Some Celeste cultivars drop their figs. BUT, they are hardier than Brown Turkey in my climate.
