Mavra Sika - CA

Hello all,

I have been reading this forum for a long time, but finally thought I would post.

I live in Emeryville, CA which is right between San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley.

I grow all my figs in pots.  My favorite up to this point to grow is violette de bordeaux.

This year though I had a fantastic surprise - I got a Mavra Sika cutting a few years back and tried to grow it in a pot as an experiment, a really beautiful plant, and I got figs this year.

We just picked and cut our first one - omg it was just about the best fig ever!  The violette de bordeaux can have a chocolaty taste, but this fig it was like strawberry and apple pie - truly amazing.

We shall see if we have continued success but was so impressed with the taste I had to register and post.  I know some of your have had longer waits or had difficulty growing this, but its truly worth the wait!

Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on growing such a rare and great tasting fig. Just wondering why you grow your figs in pots where you live. I would assume it's a matter of space.

thx for the photo. I just got a Mavra Sika and now I'm even happier with the money spent.

Welcome to the forum! If you could post additional pics of you tree and fruit, that would be great! Thanks!!

Welcome and congratulations!

Thanks guys, here is a pic.  Isn't it growing beautifully?

I grow everything in containers because I have a condo, with a deck and no land.  So I have Blueberries, grapes, figs, dwarf mandarin, dwarf orange, dwarf cherry, and other seasonal veggies like pak choi, lettuce, eggplant and tomato. I manage the soil and re-pot as needed.

I know I took a chance with this variety because its not necessarily a "container" fig.  But so far, so good.  I am going to try and keep it smallish. The deck is south facing and I have different microclimates set up (shade vs no shade) so for figs, its a lot of sun with walls to protect against too much wind and cold. I got this from trees of joy via ebay auction. (I believe they have a website)

Next up I have a Wu Han Fig I just got from Cory and Vince!  Can't wait!
