Andreas,
Nice figs.. and they caught my eye!
The closest I have to 'mavra' speaking of colors, is the Mellissi..
However I believe that they have similar deep red pulps..We have to talk!
Good luck

Hello Andreas-

Welcome to the forum.  You will find many interesting discussions about figs, here.

I have a question for you.  There is a black, Greek fig called: "ABOUKOUNIS BLACK"...could you please translate the word aboukounis, and tell me what that word means?  Does it describe a color, a city, a region, is it a the size of the fig... like big, small, etc?  This fig variety grows on the island of Chios.

Thanks for any help.  Good luck with your trees.

Hi Frank
its just some persons last name (rare greek last name) not like smith would be for you guys.  sorry to say it but you have a black greek fig ... (no name fig unknown)with the last name of the person that the cutting was taken from.
there is no translation on his lastname
can you show me some pictures,we might get lucky and find out the true name for you.
sorry if i burst your bubble

Andreas-

ANY information is all good.  Besides, all my bubbles have burst, years ago.  It is what it is.

Not being Greek, I couldn't even venture a guess as to the meaning.  So, now I know that "Aboukounis" is just some guys last name.....   Do me a favor...if you ever run into this Mr. Aboukounis, tell him I said "hi" and that want to grow his fig tree.  : )))

Andreas, thanks for your help.

Andreas....

Love the photos of your fig trees.  Your trees are loaded with figs!  I guess it helps when you can grow your trees in such high light levels, full sun, and warm weather.  Internodal distances are at a minimum, and figs get packed closely together at the branch tips.

I should have such problems!

Does the eye stay small or closed?

@ Frank
the Internodal distances are at a minimum because the plant grew in traders pot with plain dirt... not potting mix or good soil.
i guess it was the cheapest way out for the nursery.
you are right about the weather
we do have high light levels, full sun, and its warm.
we also have beatyfull islands... however the economy sucks... but its getting better LOL.

@
waynea

the eye should stay small
but with the way i treat it, (((trying to get it to set very fast in the ground with every other day watering
and lots of pellet fertilizer)))
and all that in the last 7 days that it has gone to the ground
one can only guess what the outcome will be.

@ Enigma
hello my greek friend
if you have the same plant, i see no reason to expect anything less than a 10

Andreas....

Guess what!  The ecomomy sucks here too....and, it ain't getting any better!.... AND, I don't have your climate, your sunny islands, cloudless, blue skies, and I certainly do not have your ten-month growing season....to divert my attention away from my depressing, poverty.  You want to swap places?

How about this:  I'LL jump into a cheap, trader's pot, and then you can import me! : )))))

What are the Greek quarentine laws for such an import, Frank?

i dont have to bother with quarentine laws (no one will check. public sector workers just dont care)
but the import tax is between 30-300% and you know that will be painfull.  ;-)

@Frank
i was in the states for 7 years (florida tampa bay area)
if i could have there what i have here, and most importantly
IF i could change my wifes mind (no luck so far)
yes i would change with you (but i would move back to florida)LOL
best of luck my friend.  Andreas

@ nelson20vt      @    psilva8   thank you ;-)

@ Enigma

i have tortured this plant in the last month that i put it in the ground...
i have watered it every 2nd day with about 8 gal of water every time.
i dont know how good they will taste, but the only thing i can say is that they have not split,
even though i have done every thing wrong.
that makes it a good tree in my opinion

@ Enigma     if i started "baptising" fig trees you would never know a tree as greek black or greek white ever again... LOL ;-))

@ Francisco   easy for you to say... you have the same tree.  LOL
i would like for you to compare your vasilika mavra to black madeira
and tell me your thoughts.
i have done it, but i would like to get your opinion as well.

i never did post a picture of this fig cut open because i had relatives visiting from Florida...
they went through the fig trees and left nothing but leaves
i had many forum friends asking for an update, so i will show one that i took off their hands.
its a given that the fig needed about 4-5 more days but the poor thing never got a chance to ripen.

You seem to be in the Mecca for amazing figs.

It would be nice if your relatives from Florida would just so happen to accidentally find a few cuttings in their luggage :)

thanks every one

@ Mike     i asked my cousin to take some with him  but he didnt want to risk it.
i told him they would look great outside his dental office. he is close to your old place (st.pete florida)
that would have been a great place for you to go and get cuttings... lol ;-))

with some luck he might get some next year.
