May 2013 bring success

I'm already noticing a difference in the leaves on a few cuttings. This was was a swollen bud, barely a leaf when I planted. So cute!

How long did it root like that?

That is precious, and your picture taking is amazing. Thanks for sharing. I hope they continue to do well for you.  My failures happen upon the next transplanting...but yours will be ready to go outside and should continue to do well.

Great job.

9 or 10 days. This variety was the fastest to root. I have others I put in moss at the same time and they just barely have more than that and it's been a month now.

Thank you. I plan on keeping these guys indoors till it's a bit warmer. March? April? Not sure. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I think I need more shelves and more grow lights ;)

I bought some rooting containers similar to Rafed's thread but I have no spare light to put them under! First world problems here.

Cute little baby figlet. I am amazed how quickly they are sprouting their leaves.

One more before I go to bed. I was checking on my cuttings and found this one. This is my single, lone cutting of Uncle Corky's and I very much want it to succeed. The damn thing is trying to grow a fig instead of roots! As adorable as it is, it had to go. It has like two short stubs for roots. Not so smart, Uncle Corky.
There might be a 2nd one brewing but I'll wait and see in case I'm wrong. Better be a leaf bud, bub.

Nichole, your pictures are amazing

thanks Grasa!

thanks for the photos, great progress.

AUSTIN

I have to leave this weekend and my husband will be in charge of my figs while I am gone. I am worried. He is a forgetful man. And I'll be in Canada so I can't call him to make sure he hasn't killed any of them. Thankfully the hotel will have wifi so I can harass him online in the evenings...

And in other news, my LSU Gold has decided to wake up and say good morning.

Your cuttings look wonderful I like how everything is so neat and tidy!!

Thanks Dave - I love having things neat and tidy. Makes me feel zen ;)

I gave my cups their first drink since being potted up last Sunday. I wanted to water them with mosquito dunked water since any eggs would be hatching right about now. I couldn't bring myself to water log them with a full dunk so I just watered a reasonable amount and covered with sand. I don't know how this will play out in the future when I need to water again. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.
Nylon socks are on their way. I'll cover the cups with them and hopefully I can prevent a full on problem.

More professional than me. :)

All my lovely figlets have their booties on! TAKE THAT EVIL GNATS!! Still haven't seen any :)
In the cups I have: Desert King, LSU Gold, Marseilles VS Black, and Mission. The missions will be given away because they don't do well here, but they were a great one to practice with. They rooted very fast and were the first ones to leaf out. Made me feel somewhat competent at this. The other cupped varieties are slowly leafing out, so I'm very happy. Many more varieties in my plastic shoe boxes, growing roots. More will me potted this weekend. Exciting :)

I jumped onto the rooting bandwagon with these trays. I'll find out in a month or so if it's worth the effort! Definitely a space saver.

Vince, that it's a very kind of you. I do have the lids, I had taken them off for the pic.
How are you liking this system?

Tonight I upgraded the last few stragglers that were still in moss into cups. A few I cut in half and put into the seed pods. So I have no more cuttings in moss but many many more in these rooting pods. They seem pretty happy. They haven't been in long enough for me to see roots yet but they seem green and happy. So far I haven't lost a single one since I started this nearly 2 months ago. Knock on wood!

Some are trying to put out leaves. I know that isn't a sure sign of roots. Time will tell.

Right now I have some veggie seedlings mixed in with my fig cuttings. Tomorrow I am going to separate them since the seedlings will need the light much closer to them to prevent leggy, weak baby plants. They sprouted so fast! I just planted them late Saturday night before bed. 3 nights later everyone is sprouting.

I did a blog post update on the methods I have been using.
http://www.niroha.com/2013/02/figs-and-greens.html

It has been a while since I updated this thread.

I have lost some along the way. I had 6 great looking Marseilles VS Black and lost all but one to humidity issues. That is when I learned not all varieties handle humidity the same. I'm still figuring out how to feed them, what to feed them with, and how often to feed.

I have one or two varieties where I only have one cutting and they have been slow to root. I agonize over their root growth through the cup. I see roots - ok - give me leaves!!! Patience.

Tthe fruit of my labors - Here's the figlets getting some filtered morning sun outside. The nearest tote contains my graduates - they are no longer getting babied over the humidity. The other two are getting close to graduating. I have one more root riot tray full plus 1.5 more bins inside that aren't ready to be outside yet.
