May help with bird problem

Just saw this in my email, while having coffee. My only problem is, I would need about 80 of them.

I saw this recently in there new catalog and though it looked nice. I am hoping it would help with my squirrel problem too. I wonder if you could build something bigger/similar out of PVC.

hanging unwanted CDs from the branches drives squirrels and birds away.

for the CDs: But unfortunately not the deers . I tried it .

for deers there is a product called Cayote urine or something... Deers Be Gone. we used them for the frontyard on Roses, it's a green sack full of sand that is impregnated with some sort of urine.

I was thinking the same thing as Zach.... pvc, sewing machine and the right fabric and you can make your own whatever size you need... as long as you don't glue it totally together you can just take it down in when you don't need it....

I find it kinda pricey. I made one using metal conduit, electric fencing wire, and bird netting. It is 55 feet long and 20 feet wide. It cost me less that 200 dollars and protects 16 trees.
"gene"

Cd's only work temporary,  Once the birds over come the initial issues of the cd's nothing really keeps them away.  I have over 300 feet of blueberry bushes that are grown along the road and for over 10 years I have had enough traffic that it kept the birds away, but during a dry spell we had over the past couple years the birds have over come their fears and nothing has worked.  There numbers have grown over the years as they remember where they got a free meal and now move from bush to bush while we are out there picking.  To repel deer, I found lime sulphur works the best on my apple trees.  The apple trees love it, it repels bugs, fungus and deer (they do not like the smell or taste) and it is almost organic (been around since the early Egyptians).  The only problem I have is it is getting harder and harder to find.

Gene do you have any pictures of what you built? Is it easy to disassemble? It sounds like you have a good setup. I am thinking about doing the same this year and I am trying to get ideas of what other people have done.

A simple 12' by 10' pvc hoop house frame can be constructed and covered with netting.
The materials required are;
9 lengths of 3/4" UV resistant PVC electrical tubing (from Lowes)
8 pieces of 18" long 3/8" rebar
24 nylon Tie Wraps or wire
1 roll of "Deer Netting".
For a total cost of about $45.00 for 120 Sq ft coverage compared to 16 sq ft. The "Deer Netting" is 50% of the total cost.

This is a Photo posted on the Web, the ends are not needed for a net enclosure.

1. The rebar is hammered into the ground, leaving at least 6" exposed.
2. Two lengths of tubing are connected together (has swaged end) to form a 20 foot length, and pushed over the exposed end of rebar.
3. One length is used to form the top center rib and connected with a tie wrap to each hoop.
4. The hoops are draped with the netting, which is attached with tie wraps or wire twist ties.
It can be used in summer for netting, can be draped in plastic as a season extending cold frame, and disassembled very easily for winter storage, I have used this design successfully and it is extremely sturdy.
If you do a google search for pvc hoop house plans you will find lots of plans to fabricate the frames and hoops. It could also be made with a base frame for use on a hard surface.

I'm speechless, very simple and smart solution to encage your plants. ;)

So far my solution is to use the CDs and to plant one more plant (blueberry, fig, whatever) than you need and just figure the birds will get that percentage. As long as you have the space, even go two extra plants to be sure. You will probably harvest the same either way yet the cost of one extra plant will be much lower than netting in the long run.

Pete- thanks for the pdf and picture- that looks like  great idea. I was already considering buying deer fencing this year so I think I am going to try that.
