Maybe a dumb question, but.

I have expressed in the past about my not really being able to air layer to much, or should i say lack of experience. my hardy chicago alont with a few other of my trees are putting out new growth like crazy. i am wondering if i could ait layer this new growth (still green and flexable) or if i would be better off waiting or going with older wood. i really like the way this HC is growing for me and would like a few more for another hedge project i am working on. and so far in four years it has been planted in ground i have NEVER had any winter damage to it. so it is a winner here. i got it from hirts garden through thier ebay and have been very happy with it. any advice would be great.

the first pic is when she started waking up after winter sleep.
the second was taken about 2 weeks ago with tones of new growth. i pruned heavey over winter to root a few more of these but the fungus gnats got em. i do however have a HC that i did root from another member, if memery serves its from EL that way i can see if there is a differance.

i usually air layer a new branch that has harden off around the area where i'll score and put the soil mix on.

I had success with hardened branches, at least a year old.  I've never tried green air layering, but would be interested to hear if anyone has successfully done so.

Well frank i may give it a try, there is one branch im eyeballing that looks as though it could be a winner. at least worth trying out. beings its still green and tenter i dont think i will do any scoring. just pop a pot on there and fill and let it set for a few months and see what happends.

Dave I did an air layer last year on new growth that was beginning to harden off. I didn't score the branch but removed 3 leaves from where I put the soil around the branch. It took exactly 4 weeks to see roots but I didn't remove it until 6 weeks. Once removed it started to wilt a bit so I took off a couple leaves and put it in the shade and it perked up within 2 hours.
