MBVS vs Ginos Bl observations

This is the first year I have both in ground coming out of winter.  Both were treated the same (insulated and wrapped with tarp) and side by side on the south wall of the house. The MBVS is 3 year old tree been in ground 1.5 years, the Ginos a 2.5 year old tree been in ground just under a year.  Both bore well last year and were trimmed back to about 6.5' for winter.

MBVS:  5-6" of tips dead, rest of plant healthy.  Started budding out immediately after uncovering (were swelling covered).

Gino's Bl:  1-3" of tips dead, rest of plant is healthy.  Took 3 weeks to start budding out.

Conclusion:  at least in my case with my two trees I would call the Ginos more cold hardy as it had less damage and waited longer to bud out, avoiding any late freezes.

Greg what zone are you in?

Thanks for posting your observations Greg.  Very interesting.  I have an MVBS and it looks like a typical Mt Etna / HC type.  I had a small Gino's Black but it died :( so I can't really compare the two.

I have mbvs in ground , same age and conditions. I am supposedly in 7a but we were Below zero twice. Florea and Atreano and verte are starting sprouts from the ground at this time. I think MBVS will come back, but it is not certain yet

It is interesting that you are in a colder zone than me but your in ground figs are already starting to break bud.  Only one or two of mine out of 12 have any swelling buds at all.  My MvsB only had about 8 inches of mulch around its base as protection.  It looks like about 10-20% of the wood is alive though I won't be absolutely sure until it starts budding out.

Thanks for the report, Greg.  Nice to hear Gino's came out strong.  I have mine in a pot.

Johnny,

how do they look now ?

Coming out nicely.  The Gino's ended up with a little more loss than initially thought.  The MBVS is still ahead in putting out vegetative growth.

I have a 1 year old MBVS plant in a 3 gallon pot.  I am in Maryland, zone 7a.  Should I plant it in ground now or wait one more year?  I have a couple backups that are from cuttings I started over the winter.

If it were me, I would wait another year, maybe two.
up pot if needed in the meantime

Rob, I was in exactly the same situation as you one year ago with my then 1 year old MvsB and I planted it in the ground.  It grew very well and gave several fruits last summer.  I only protected it with about 6 inches of mulch.  It froze down pretty much to the ground but is coming back nicely now.  It's definitely one of the most cold hardy figs.   I wouldn't hesitate to plant it in the ground especially since yo have backups.

Greg, have you had any problem with mice or voles chewing on your trees under their wrappings over the winter?

Susan,
A tip from Bass that I use, Mothballs under the wrap.  Never had any issues to date!

That's a good tip. I'll probably be wrapping trees this winter -- and being on a farm, I've got LOTS of mice (not to mention moles and voles) to contend with!
