Mega Celeste

This is a winner in my yard. Heavy producer the last couple years.
It sits in a 15gl pot and loving every bit of it. It was up potted this season or late last season. I don't remember but once it was up potted it took off and never looked back.

Sitting no more than 4.5' total but weeping due to the weight from the fruit. One branch is almost at ground level.

The leaves are dark green and very healthy. The fruit is one of the best tasting in my collection. This is why it was up potted.

I might clip a few leaves off tomorrow so the sun can get to the fruit to help ripen.

I highly recommend this for everyone who do not have it.

Please enjoy the pictures,

It is a hardy fig too, at least in my zone -- with no winter protection in a pot.

There is a Mega Celeste in my area, makes a beautiful tree. I think I posted some pictures of it. I samples the figs off this tree, they were very good. Herman said, they will sour in a wet year. We had a wet year this year but I did not go sample the figs.
Thanks for posting the picture Rafed.

Jon, said in a posting that I had, a Celeste is a Celeste...????   So can anyone clear what is a Mega Celeste, I am still new to all of this. Thanks !!!

Jon's Quote:  "By DNA a Celeste is a Celeste is a Celeste. But different "strains" have different characteristics, and throw in different climate and water and fertilizer, as they vary from year to year, and tree to tree, and they are different. I have a different variety that did something this season that is has never ever done in 30 years. "

That's interesting.  My mega Celeste died from some cold nights in early summer in Oregon.  Of course they were warm compared to Michigan.  Maybe I'll have to try it again.

Armando,
That's one man opinion. Not discrediting Jon. But there are many strains of the Celeste. Perhaps that's what he meant?

This is the larger version of the Celeste strain. It is a bit bigger than a golf ball when fully ripe. I believe it was Harvey that just posted a thread on it a day or two ago. He included pictures of the ripe fruit.

This thread says it is not a Celeste.  I don't get naming it Mega Celeste if it is not a Celeste.

Thanks,
Now we have a problem. LOL

I got mine a few years ago and long after that thread was posted from Jon.
So I don't know who named it Mega Celeste but at the moment I have to stick with that name. I have no choice.

But it looks like we can agree about the fig naming. This has been my argument for a long time.

Thanks Rafed, I am going to rename my Celeste to "Godzilla Celeste"...LOL      On a serious note: I think Jon was saying their is different strains.   Thanks for clearing this up Rafed......You da Man !!!

And a little misunderstanding on my part too. Dang it!
I'll own up to it, my bad.

Far from being the man, Armando. I have a lot to learn. But thanks.

Is that a good move generally speaking to remove leaves to allow more sun directly on the figs? How many leaves would you remove max a couple per branch?

There are many tricks and tips you can follow to help increase the ripening.

Some people like to rub a bit of olive oil on the ostiole (eye) but you compromise flavor for speed.
Some people like to pinch the bud tips off for (1) to branch out and (2) to help the fruit ripen.
Some people like to remove some of the newer fruit off each branch. Meaning, remove two out of five (just an idea).
And some people like to remove the leaves to let the sun directly hit the fruit.

I did both of the last two on a couple other trees. I removed a few of the newer fruit off each branch and a few of the leaves closest to the fruit.

Not saying this will be 100% affective and guarantee to ripen. The weather plays an important role in this. But it helps when the conditions are right.

Good luck

Mega Celeste looks very nice.  I wonder if anyone is growing this fig in-ground in the colder zones?

Thanks. Sorry for the off-topic question.

Nothing off topic about it. It was a good question and glad you asked.

I did my best to answer it.

I hope I have that problem some day where the branches are bending due to the amount of fruit LOL

does it taste like celeste? from what you said, i should soon get to taste my HC.

evil rats removed 1/2 the fruit n 1/3 the leaves.

Susie,

It was a year ago and did not keep record of the taste.
I did enjoy it a lot, otherwise I would not have moved it in a bigger pot.

I will update on the taste once the fruit is ripened.

It was very helpful. Thanks. I did pinch leaves already. It's a pain to stare at these things the same size day after day but I know it takes patience.
