Melanzana 2017

Have 2 Melanzana varieties a round (tonda) and a long (lunga).  The round Melanzana has been by best breba performer this year in both quantity (9 from 2 trees) and for now tied for taste with my Portugal black brebas.  The long one is ripening tomorrow and will likely be better tasting but not as many (only 3) of them this year.

We have had wet spring and summer.  It has rained almost every day since mid June and July along with some serious hail that put holes and tore many fig leaves.

The key to this fig is not letting plant dry out during fig production and of course as with any fig don't pick until perfectly ripe.  It took me a few tries to get perfectly ripe ones.  This fig tasted as good as it looks.  Very sweet, juicy, some seed crunch, couldn't place the taste tone.

Thank You for clarifying that the Melanzana is a group of figs rather than just one. Very nice photos.

Fig looks great.

The rain was been unbelievable this year.

Nice looking fig. I'm looking for a Melinzana or maybe some cuttings in the fall .

@Sas, thanks, to be clear this Melanzana in photos above is the one in widespread circulation at least in the N.E.
It has been an abundant and consistent breba producer for me.  As I understand the various strains of Melanzana figs are located across S. Italy. Only aware of a few that have been brought over here.

@Thanks Tony.  It seems we have been stuck in an endless wet weather loop since mid June.  Hopefully this cycle breaks and we get some of those lazy hazy hot dry summer weather soon.

@cheshirefig many people on forum have this fig.  You may want to add a signature to your profile with a fig wish list to let others know what figs you are looking to add to your collection.

Great thanks. I'll look into doing that. I'm new. Lol

My other Melanzana figs are ripening now.  These are long and look similar to LdA.

This fig named Melanzana Merdascola by someone on F4F is one of my favourite figs.
Many say it same as LdA but it is a darker colour than LdA and produces a lot of brebas.

This fig I let stay on a day longer than I should have.  But I am very glad I did because the taste was phenomenal.
My best tasting Breba 2017 (so far).
enjoy!

Hi Pino,

I have melanzana calabrese, which also looks like MM. I will post pics soon. It is also much like LdA, but darker like yours and the breba is wonderful. I wonder if MM and melanzana calabrese could be the same? I will have to post some pics, but it sure looks like the same fig to me. Thanks, Bill.

Observation well made Bill. I too have MC and I am interested to see your pics as well.

Bill, would be great to see pics of yours!  I am sure someday someone will grow LdA and this fig side by side and then we'll know for sure maybe.
Its such a great producer and super taste I will be trying this in ground next year.

Bill, when you say similar to LdA, in what way.
I have the Nordland which is similar to Long d'Aout if not the same but it's never this dark red.

A friend just got back from Italy and gave me 3 varieties - Vendimmiola, Melanzana Blanca and Melanzana Negra. Can someone enlighten me of these varieties as this is the first time I came across theses three. Tq

its OK! but to be sure its best to send me those fig cuttings and I will get back to you on how they grow in Canada..lol

Italian words many times get anglicized or made Spanish sounding in this case.  This is what I think you got;

- Melanzana Bianca.  I never heard of it.  Melanzana figs have the distictive purple eggplant colour or shape.  So your fig is probably a white fig that someone thought has some similarity to eggplant shape.

- Melanzana Nera probably refers to one of the Fico Melanzana there are quite a few in S. Italy and some go by other names(fica maranciana, lungo del portogallo, melanzana Calabrese, Melanzana tonda ...)

- fico bianco della Vendemmia (grown In Avellino).  Medium-sized pear-shaped fig pale pink upper and yellow at bottom with white patches on the epidermis and pink and white flesh.  This one sounds interesting to me!

However, people mistakenly identify figs all the time so you won't know for sure until you grow them and get some ripe figs.

You may want to post your own topic and get other people's ideas.

The Melanzanas have been my star dark breba producers.  The black breba figs are taking their time ripening they didn't like the wet spring and summer as much as the light and melanzana figs did.

These are the last of the Melanzana brebas this year.  Again lucked out and picked them perfectly ripe.

Actually picking ripe figs is not luck it takes attention to detail making sure the fig is drooping fully, fig honey pushing out the ostiole, skin soft especially around the neck and most importantly when you really think its ripe don't pick it wait another day at least..lol

Picked the last Melanzana MM breba today.
Have been watching it get bigger and bigger and start to show cracks on skin.
Unfortunately we have had thunderstorms with heavy downpours seems every afternoon around 4pm.  A a little too much cracking on this one, came in at 104 grams.
Very sweet figgy taste but too juicy so not as nice tasting as the previous Melanzanas.
