Thanks for posting these pics, Nelson

Searched for more information on  Melanzana and found this equation in one of the old threads:

Longue d'Aout = Slocan = Norland = Melazanna

Is that relatively accurate?

Is there a US source for this fig? Adriano's won't ship across the border and it is no longer listed at Raintree. The more I look at pictures of it  the more attractive it seems. Any leads would be appreciated.

Wait for November to show spring availibilty for Raintree. I ordered mine around Thanksgiving of last year.

Those do look  great.
Is Melazanna  the same as Melazanna Merdescola? I notice Adriano no longer lists them both on his website, but seems to be using the same description for Longue d'Aout that he used to have for Melazanna Merdescola.

Grant,

It is said the Melanzana Merdascola and Longue D'Aout are the same.
I have both. We will have to wait another season or two to confirm on my part.

The Melanzana is much darker in color.

Taste of Melanzana is fruity - cantoulope. This taste comes across rather pronounced. I prefer the taste of sweetness mixed with light flavor. Best taste to-date for the season would be Beall.

Melanzana and Melanzana Merdoscola are different figs & they taste differently. In my opinion taste wise, the MM is better. MM is actually Longue d'Aout.

Rafed, Paul,
Thanks for the clarification.

Here are a couple pics of the Melanzana Merdascola.
Smaller than it should be so hoping next season it will grow bigger fruit.

Since there very few sources for the Melanzana fig, I decided to breed my own, heretofore to be known as Melanzana FMD.  ;)))

FMD , nice eggplant!! You crack me up!

FMD,

Does it have an open or closed eye?
Is this a breba or main crop?

@Frank, that looks like a bona fide 'auberge dark' if you ask me.

Guys, guys thanks for the compliments on my new find. Cuttings are available for trade.

Amazingly this specimen has no eye at all. It crops continuously all season long. and the insides are pure white.

It has a strong  melanzana taste, best brought out when sliced, dipped in egg, rolled in bread crumbs and placed in layers in a baking dish, covered with mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce and baked for 30 minutes until golden brown. Yum.

Try that with your fancy Longue d'Aout. :)

Disclaimer:

The picture with the eggplant is actually an eggplant and not a fig. Melanzana is Italian for eggplant. Just having a little fun. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
