Melanzana cuttings anyone?

Anyone out there know where I can order a few Melanzana cuttings? Checked eBay, etc to no avail. Thanks!!

Welcome to the board :)

Don't know for sure, but maybe pitangadiego (Jon, the site owner, who runs Encanto Farms in the real world) has either a shippable plant or some cuttings.  Here's a link to his profile if you want to email him: http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/profile/680727

BTW, based on what I've read, Melanzana Merdascola is supposed to be the same as Niagara Black, Northland/Nordland, Slocan, and Longue d'Aout.

Hopefully this season we will get more confirmation about the similarity of these including
The brebas.
My niagara is still small :(

Oh nice.  I have a Niagara cutting that has rooted so it will be even more interesting to see what it does.

I have a small Niagara Black and Melanzana so it will be interesting to compare if I get figs this year.
Many of these funny names such as merdascola (not funny to some since it means poop maybe the name come about by people that don't understand a foreign language and repeat what they think they heard).
The Niagara Black was discovered y John P in Niagara Falls where many people from Calabria live.
The melanzana I remember from Calabria was large long and purple (like an eggplant) and delicious.  Hope that is the one I have.

Pin what language is that ? Poop. Funny

Merda is actually poop in Italian.  I think merdascola is just a slang someone came up with.

Anybody with Niagara Black should remove any breba crop because they are absolutely useless and will needlessly slow down the main crop .

John

That is good to know John.  Thanks!

John thanks
Are the brebas long and deformed like in LDA?

Maybe those growing in very hot should triall the brebas?

They are like curly cucumbers in shape and generally drop off on their own and very dry inside .

Hi Johnparav,
Ho no, don't tell me that !
I'm still to see a breba appear on my "longue d'aout" . This year might be the first time (waiting since 2009 ) , although once more the terminal buds look damaged from the winter.
They may well recover this year ... Ho well, if I get brebas, I'll give them a try on "Longue d'aout" . I at least want to see them for myself.
Legend has it, that those brebas are huge ...
Do you have pics of the brebas ?
Even without brebas, my lda maincrops are my slower ripener here.

jdsfrance ( your name ? )

Here is a link from Nelson who posted about a breba from a Niagara Black plant I gave him . The ripe ones don't look much better from my experience , maybe others have different experience .

John

The brebas looks similar. From a book i saw that the brebas on LDA taste bland too so its similar to your description John . That book also says that many main crop LDA figs tend to fall if not pollinated.

Those growing LDA and NB - any maincrop falling?

My area has no wasp so never pollinated , but don't have problem with main crop dropping .

John

No main crop dropping here

No main crop dropping on LDA ... even when attacked by sparrows they would still hang . I would say that I need to cut the neck where it is attached to the branch.
If I try to pull them I make a wound on the tree with a little piece of bark coming with the fig instead of staying at the tree.
So the maincrop fruits are really well secured to the tree.
