The batteries in the camera died, so only the one pic.
fig is about 2 inches from stem to eye, about inch and a half or more wide, eye is not open.
have not had a ripe one yet to taste.
unripe one was red inside.

My husband remembers melanzana figs in Italy.  But he doesn't know if that was called all big, purple figs or if it was a specific variety. 
Is there anyone this side of the Canada border that has a melanzana fig or knows who has?

Your fig is not MM (Longue D'Aout). I received my MM years back from AF in Canada. I positively identified it as Longue D'Aout after watching it grow side-by-side next to a LdA from another European source.
AF changed the name of this fig based on my discovery. Here is a recent post with photos of my LdA. If you like, I can share cuttings with you come fall. LdA is an excellent fig.

Regarding the one you have now, don't give it up if it is a fig that you like. Just call it an unknown for now until some one can positively identify it for you.

Hey Grant, Mario purchased his plant from Adriano either 2009/10 but it was mislabeled.

I'm not sure what it is but what ever it is it originated from Adrianos collection.

Thank-you for the offer of cuttings Leon.
I have also had offer from this side of the border, and when the time comes I think I will go with that rather than risk border issues.

Certainly I will not give up on this one, as it tasted fine this year. I can only imagine how much better it would have tasted with a real summer to ripen in.
but I guess tasting fine is kind of subjective, with only one other variety ripening figs for me this year, anything fresh is bound to taste good. lol

Grant isn't to cold in Canada for figs, or are you in a warm area. Do you grow them partially indoors during winter or just keep them close to the house for warmth..???

hi Rodney,
most are in pots and I bring them inside to cold room, 34-40F degrees, for winter. They go dormant.
I have 2 outside, in ground, one close to house with southern exposure, another out in backyard dogleg valley, so it is naturally very protected from cold winter winds etc. I give extra protection to both outside trees for the winter. I am in zone 5b/6a border, so winters are cold and long.

I had one MM ripen for me this year. The plant is less than a year old, and the fruit was smallish and partially mis-shapen so only half was good to eat. I was kindly given the cuttings last winter (merci!) and don't know that person's source. It was a very nicely flavored fig and I'm looking forward to eating another, but sadly that won't be this year.
