Melanzana MS = Longue D'Aout

Well, thanks to Paully's keen observation that MMS looked very similar to his Slocan Fig (which he claims is LdA), I can now conclude that MMS is Longue D'Aout.
I have both varieties however, the MMS is in the ground and the LdA is potted and on the other side of our property. Up to now, my LdA had not ripened any figs but when Paully first announced his observation, I compared the leaves and finally the fruit- and sure enough, they are the same fig!

Leon, it was Michael Bostock who alerted me to this observation. Its great that your confirmation helps to solve this puzzle. Anyway, this variant is a keeper for me. The flavor is very acceptable for a large fig and it ripens main crop fig in my zone. I recently posted a pic of MMS in my facebook.

The comparison looks pretty convincing, but Condit might disagree!  See pages 446 & 451 of "Fig Varieties: A Monograph", downloadable as a PDF from my website:   http://sites.google.com/site/kiwifruitsalad2
Also possible that Melanzana MS isn't the Melanzana described by Condit.

I think that Ira Condit description doesn't match Leon's Melanzana.
I agree with Leon, the figs in the pictures are the same or very close varieties.
My LdA is the same strain (for sure!) like Leon's LdA. However my LdA figs are a bit different (not much), surely due to growing conditions and the age of the plant.

By the way, an excellent variety!

They look the same to me.  If Leon has both trees and can compare, I am glad to have the information.  thanks,

Good Jon Leon, Seems 2010 was a great year to ID a few different named cultivars wich is great theres no need to have 2-3 identical figs with different names.

Funny enough is what I have read about Longue D'aout by Condit and eisen is that is is a mediocre fig but yet everyone I know that grows it really enjoys this fig go figure.

I agree with Paully - the "Slocan" fig (aka longue d'aout, melanzana merdoscola) is very good especially in cooler climates as it seems to ripen around the same time as e.g. Osborn Prolific, lattarula and Marseilles VS but it is better tasting than the former 2 and significantly larger than the latter. I have had some 2nd crop figs come in over 100 g. Note that the breba are still larger but don't have much taste.

Note also that "Melanzana" means "eggplant" in Italian. My wife is Italian and I have spoken to numerous Italians who often referred to any "eggplant" shaped
fig as "melanzana". In Calabria, they refer to black mission as "melanzana" which is more apt, in my opinion, than tagging longue d'aout as such since it also has the right color.

My Melazanna is ripening, likely pickable today. I have both Longue D'Aout and Melanzanna Merdoscola ripening too. Would take pic's and would have them posted. My Melazanna bears a smaller fig than MMS & so far they have not drop any figs or too few to be noticed in my fig forest. The Melazanna ripens 2 to 3 weeks later than MMS. My Melazanna & MMS are from Adriano.
