Meridian Celeste 2012

This is a good Celeste. It appears to be rain tolerant and it holds onto its fruit allowing it to concentrate sugars and literally dry on the tree. I failed to visit this tree last season and after a kick in the butt - I mean encouragement - by Jason, I stopped by to sample a few and share some snapshots of the tree and its fruit. This is a keeper Celeste for 8B. I trust that it does well in other locations. The figs were picked and eaten today.

Edit: The mother tree resides in Tallahassee on South Meridian Street. I "found" and tasted it in 2010 but I was unsure if it was a Celeste (not sure why). I took cuttings and shared them with a few forum friends including Jason. Jason has been asking for additional information. I was able to satisfy his request today.

Yum!

Beautiful looking fig and thanks for taking the time to share the pictures.

Those are very small but yummy looking fruits. Is that typical of Celeste?

Why do you call it 'meridian'?

Ooh, ooh I can answer that, Gina.

The tree is located on Meridian Road, in Tallahassee.

"Ooh, ooh I can answer that, Gina." - made me laugh

'Good-looking Frank', thanks for the answer.

Hey good look'en
Ya you know who you are. You have this fig too?

I do!  Going in the ground soon, hopefully near its buddy Foxcroft.

Well Jason my good friend. Keep us posted on how it does bro.

I have one that doesn't drop either. This is the worst year I've seen it. I plan on chopping it down this Fall and get it going like the previous years. Very sweet little figs.

Good luck on your Jason.

I can wing some cuttings possibly in the fall if this Celeste is interesting to you.

Jason,

If you are telling me then no. I'm o.k. bro.
I have a good one, give them to someone that needs them.

But good luck with yours

Let me know if you need anything from me.

JD, would love to trial it next to all my other Celestes.

Jon,
Thinking of your Celeste trials, I have a Celeste (Unknown Foxcroft from the Foxcroft subdivision) that is productive, does not drop its figs (here in 8B), and produces tasty figs. However, I have little to no information about its tolerance to rain and its ability to hold the figs until they are 'dead ripe' because the birds and I cannot wait that long.

If Meridian and Foxcroft are 2A and 2B, then the Jackson-Carver Celeste named after Ms. Jackson who lives on Carver street is my favorite. She keeps her gate locked and I cannot get to the main trunk to get the figs that the birds are enjoying. Thus I have only had figs hanging over her fence since I took the attached photo in 2010.

Hey Viv,
I think that these darker because they started to wrinkle, dry on the tree, and the sugar began to concentrate. They were so good. I made a cheap version of Frank's Lunch of grilled figs with cheese (multi-grain bread and Fontina). Thanks for the idea Frank.

Jason and Jon,

The Mother Meridian tree is gone. The building is under new management and apparently a large fig tree out front interferes with the laws of heaven and business.

If either of you can send me a layer (or cuttings) by this time next season, I would really appreciate it.
