Meroni Chestnut

I know this does not have any thing to do with figs other than rooting. I just received some Meroni Chestnut cutting from  Italy  today. Does any one know how to root them?
 Thanks Bugs

Bugs....I do believe the chestnut cuttings need to be grafted, and if successful will usually 5 or more years to bear fruit (nuts).  I was told (and have read) if a chestnut germinated from seed, those sometimes take up to 30 years to bear.   I could be wrong.

Thanks Sara I do not know a thing about chestnut any little bit will help.

Bugs years ago when i was buying trees the chestnut and American elm caught my interest. I bought the elm but not the chestnut as i heard it needs a pollinator , you may want to further check into that.
They are excellent in my opinion though as i ate many of them.

If you can find a chestnut tree at a nursery even if it is already grafted and graft your cuttings on it you may have success.
This is not the best time of year but it is worth trying.
The only other thing is if you have access to the cuttings would be to wait read up and get your rootstock plants and have them send cuttings at the proper time for grafting.
Good luck I hope you are successful

I all ready have a American chestnut tree that I started from a chestnut nut, 3 years ago, I will take a change and try to graft it. I have 4 cutting , I know it is not the time, but what do I have to lose. It is better than not trying any thing at all. graft 2 cuttings and pot 2. The cuttings came from a grafted trees that is why I did not get the nuts. Thank for all the in put. This is a good forum, some one on here knows some thing about growing just about ever thing if you just asked the right question.

Thank again Bugs

I am not sure if you can grow a European chestnut in America.

Here is my Dunstan. I only have one. It is self pollinating and produces loads of sweet delicous chestnusts every fall.

Good looking tree. Thanks for the web site. Learning more all the time.

Very nice

I was wondering if rooting in water would work? But soaking in water for a week or two is a good idea. Do you think garden soil or bag soil would be better? Just experiment.

Someone suggested putting the cutting in the ref until spring, than try grafting them at that time. Does anyone think that might work? I understand they do this with fruit trees.
