This is a cucumber fig that has been pecked at through a mesh bag. Just cut off the pecked part and ate the fig, but it looks like the birds are getting hip to the bags

Once they find out the bags will only serve to alert them.

It may still work out that the bag will protect the fig enough that they get none and move on, leaving you with a damaged fig.  If that is the case, then maybe as each bird learns that, they will then avoid the bag. Or, eventually they will figure out how to dismantle the bag enough to get the prize. I don't know, just depends on how durable the bag is and how persistent the pecker is.

Barry, you are lucky to have such polite and well-mannered birds.
Mine would have torn the bag to pieces and stomped on it while giving me the middle wing, I mean finger.
You do not want to mess with Tallahassee mockingbirds.

I swear if the birds mess with my containers ill cover my whole balcony with shade fabric.

Frank, no Tallahassee Mockingbirds for me! So far I'm just seeing attempts to peck through the mesh bags, don't want the birds ripping them to shreds, no thank you! Calvin, I was able to salvage most of that fig, just cut off the damaged piece so if that's the worst of it, I"ll be happy. I am hoping the bags will discourage them and they will move on.
