met some scouts from louisiana...

so last week, i had a chance to meet two young scouts from louisiana. i'm rather strict one in the troop as far as adult leaders are concerned. i don't say much unless i see something that might lead to bigger problem. so i was curious when i saw two boys turning all the stones over in a stream while there were people fishing down stream.

i asked "what you catching there boys?"

one of the boy replied "crawdad...    good eat.". well.. i had nothing to say to that.

Sounds like you were lost for words !

;o)

martin, i was. i expected him to look at me like he did something wrong and i would have said "there are people fishing down stream". but he had perfect answer.. the kicker was "good eat". i cherish self reliance. and that boy summarized everything i believe in "good eat".

Those boys were raised right.

I love crawdads. It has been a long time since I have had any. I guess i'll just have to make do with the saltwater variety they grow up here in Maine.

Yup they were just fishing which there are many ways to catch dinner from water.
Iv'e seen gallon jugs on lines but the one method that caught me by surprise in my late teens at the lakefront casting for trout was folks with rigged fire extinguishers useing them to shoot out trot lines off the pier.
You can see setup up at bottom of page http://www.idofishing.com/forum/showflat.php/Number/1113445/fpart/1/pier-fishing-on-lake-michigan

When I was a kid,I would catch crawfish in GA creeks using a long skinny stick to poke inside holes in the creekbank, tree roots, under logs, and rocks. That stirred the crawfish out of their homes. You just had to watch out for the rare snake that didn't like being poked with a stick. ;)

Good story, Pete.

I still can't believe how tough my feet were as a kid growing up on the farm.  I always walked on the dirt and gravel roads and in the fields with bare feet.  I was catching crawfish in some irrigation ditches around 1966 one day when I jumped across a ditch and the Johnson Grass on the other side cut me between two toes pretty good.  That sent me home for some doctoring only to learn I also had my first episode of hayfever which got very bad.  I think those LA boys would have fit in great with my lifestyle back then.
