Micro-climates

Hi, has anyone in the north set up micro-climates to help figs grow?

I have not set up a micro climate but I do have a hot front spot facing south. The vinyl siding creates a very hot ( almost too hot) area where figs have done very well against the house in pots. The area is a good future planting spot. Nearby asphalt driveway adds as well.

Similar to Dominick,

We have planted on the south side of our house 7 figs. They are all up against a heated south facing basement wall. After they become mature and hopefully cold harder, we will leave them uncovered for the winter, as a test.

We started testing cold hardy figs about six years ago. At that time we thought we were in a zone 6. But, later found out we are in a zone 5. The micro climants do indeed make a big difference. The ground one foot or more from the basement wall, never freezes.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, I was thinking of putting a 6 ft  fence  of greenhouse film around the fig garden.I have done this with pepers that will not grow in vt otherwise, but will  bring the temp up around the figs.Rex.

I would have given up on fig if I did not have this 24ft south facing garage wall with good sunshine. I place my fig pots very close to each other by the side of this wall. The neighbour's house location helps reduced the air movement thus creating good environment for growth and ripening. This is the area where I get most of my ripe figs.
I am not sure how much it helps but I keep a few dozen 3-gallon clear plastic pots filled with water distributed in this area. Both water and plastic have high specific heat. It does not hurt even if it does not help too much because  sometimes I empty a bottle to water a plant immediately if some reason I see too much leaf droop and dry soil.

Using warmed water that has been in the sun is better than cool water. My water source is a pond so I think I should do the same, the water is so cold early in the season.

The main purpose of water filled containers is heat retention. Quick availability for watering a plant in distress is a bonus.
