Mid-summer pruning -- advice needed

Several of my trees that I just put in ground last year have put off a ton of new growth to the point where the limbs are crowding one another for light.  Some of the new growth is very strong and some is rather weak.  What would you do in this instance, prune back the weaker growth to allow more energy to be directed to the stronger growth?

I also want to open up the tree to more sunlight.  Do you do any summer pruning or wait until the fall or the following spring?  My trees are all in bush form and I want to make sure I'm developing a good framework of limbs for future seasons.

I usually do my pruning in the fall, but on occassion will do soome light pruning in summer, then try to grow green cuttings from the pruned stems. You definitely want to prune crossing branches, and those that form right next to each other it's best to choose one to keep and prune out the other. Good luck

Always listen to your tree and to yourself. If you think it needs it, do it.

You should open the middle to alleviate crowding and allow light in.

It will help the trees in the long run. Summer pruning will not hurt the tree.

I'd definitely prune for one main reason!  Free fresh green cuttings to trade for some on your wish list!  Sometimes it's hard to find a green cutting without figs, and then an air layer is better, so you have a new tree getting rooted from the mom, PLUS you get to eat the figs when ripe!

Good luck!

Thinned out a bunch of branches last evening, mostly spindly branches or limbs that were competing. Thanks for the advice!
