Millipedes

Millipedes are predatory, right? So, if I have big, fat millipedes in my little Longue d'Aout start, are they telling me there is something else in there, or are they a concern in and of themselves? It's my only one of this variety and it's not looking to good right now.

Dale, millipedes eat mainly dead or decaying vegetation, not sure if they would eat fresh growing vegetation.

Centipedes on the other hand, are the predators.

A general rule for bugs is "if they are fast runners they're usually predators, while the slower bugs are the ones on the

menu. There are of course exceptions like the Praying Mantis which sits and waits for it's victim.

i thought they like damp places. centipedes are the ones that goes around eating other things.

I don't know Dale (if millipedes are a problem in themselves).  But I had a TON of millipedes (thousands of the little guys) crawling around in one of my Hardy Chicago pots this spring.  The tree has thrived and is one of my best trees this year, and it looks as though the millipedes are gone.  They caused no apparent damage to the tree.  Not sure what the attraction was, and not sure why they're gone.  Anyway, that's one guy's experience with millipedes on one tree this year... they seemed harmless.   (Can't conclude that's always the case, but that's how it worked out for me this year).

Mike

Thanks all. I am going to inspect further. I would hate to lose this start, as it is my only one of this type.
