Mini greenhouse 2 liter soda bottle

Hey everyone TONYSAC here the title pretty much says it all I just figured you guys would enjoy the pics and the story there is 6 different varieties rooting in small 1.5x1.5  rockwool cubes with the whole in the center of each. I put them basically in the dimples in the bottom of the 2 liter bottle and one wedged in the middle of them all on the 28th of last month. I mixed some powdered root hormone in water (home depot) nothing special in fact I dont think it did anything and soaked the cuttings and cubes in water I squeezed the cubes left them damp then poured the mix into the holes in the cubes and dipped the ends in the powder I inserted them into the cubes after they where installed into the bottle I put the bottle on top of my boiler actually near the 7in exhaust pipe to the chimney and that helped out the greenhouse effect once I seen the one bud break I would put it near a south facing window during the day and back in the warm boiler room at night and thats what I got I hope you like the pics thanks for looking...PS I cut the soda bottle in half just wanted to clarify that im not a magician

Wow they look very good.

Thanks Anthony, nice group of pictures showing your technique, the mini- green house, and the use of those rock wool cubes.
I have a few cuttings going that I also started in rock wool cubes, hope they turn out as well.

thanks much for sharing! And good luck.

Make sure to keep us updated!  This would be a real space saver, and it should get rid of some mold issues with the 'venting' of th open cap, wouldn't it?

Yes DT it would it actually had mold the first couple of days but once the moisture really started to build up on the walls of the bottle and I wiped them clean it stopped I only air it out every couple of days I ill keep you all posted.

Good reminder for all of us.

Soda bottles, zip-loc bags, milk jugs - there are a number of ways to create a "greenhouse". Just think of a greenhouse as a controlled environment. You might be controlling temperature, or humidity, or sunlight, or multiple things. When you think about it that way, you can be very creative in choice of materials, especially ones that are cheap, or free.

I use 1 gallon clear salad dressing jars. I have a sun tea jar lid on 2 of the jars. The covered spout works well as ventilation. You could also buy a couple suntea jars after summer is over and they are on clearance sale.

That is my Two Cents about mini greenhouses. I don't drink soda so I never have any bottles.

Kim -Xena22-, show us your pictures....

The first three figs I started maybe 6-8 years ago (Jurupa, Flanders, Monstreuse) were planted the way the friend who gave them instructed.  I stuck them at least a foot into the ground and about 8-12" above.  Then cut the bottom off of a 2 liter soda bottle and covered the cutting and put some soil around the bottle to hold it in place.  When weather warmed up, the vent (cap) came off.  Worked great.

@TONYSAC -- perhaps better idea to pinch off newly form figlets so that cutting energies can be
focus on rooting. Just my thoughts.

Yea I know Paully as of right now theres nothing on there I was going to leave one on just to take pics thought they wold look cool but nothing is growing yet.

Hey Tony,
Nice pics and process.
I also use the 2 liter bottles, usually going from the sphagnam moss into soil mixture in the 2 liter bottles.
I make about 4 holes around the bottom for drainage, and a slit on the top for a little ventilation while the cap is still on.
The only concern I would have about doing multiple cuttings in one bottle is that once the roots
start to form they may get tangled and taking them apart may damage the new roots.

I have had great luck doing this Tony. i ususaly leave the cap on a few days until the moister starts on the side walls then take the cap off. in some cases i have forgot all about them and went back weeks later to find well branched little trees happy as can be.

Very efficient use of space, great idea.
