Mission fig leafing out

Hello all!  I have a question regarding my fig that is beginning to leaf out, should I prune out the new growth that's coming in on the bottom?  Is this even the right time to prune?   Anything special I should be doing now?

Very nice looking tree.  Your's is a week or ten days ahead of my black mission.

If it were me, I'd prune out the low growth now, as well as for shape and some of the interior and branches that cross each other.  Last month would have been better, but now is ok.

Thanks!  I'm in zone 8B in California, guess we're just a little ahead of you.  I sure love this time of year, last year I wasn't able to attend to the garden as much as I'd like, trying to make up for it this year.

On the second picture I posted, are those the figs budding out or leaves?  Another fig I have, Panache, already has a fig coming out, somehow, I thought figs fruited later?

Looks like three little figlets on that branch. (the lowest one looks partially hidden by a leaf).   You'll know for sure in another week.

Many varieties have two crops in a year.  Some even have three.  Many have an early crop on old wood. Then a later, main crop on this year's wood.

Ya, I love this time of year too.  It apears that I have lost three or four of my trees, but two are coming back from the base, and I have replacements on deck if the other two died completely.

Tomatoes and squash are in the ground surroundeed with black plastic and little protective collars around the tomatoes, as it's not quite warm enough for them here yet.   I like to get an early start.

That's great, I'm hoping this year to see some figs.  You've got squash in already?  I'm waiting till our soil warms up some more, we *could* have another freeze.  I do have my tomatoes in, I planted seeds at the end of January and they did better than I expected.  I'm using Wall o Waters.

I put a 4 ft wide strip of black visqueen down, cut holes in it then planted the maters, which I had started a month and a half ago indoors.   Then I made little tar paper collars and put one around each plant.  I  cover them with pots when temps threaten to drop much below 50.   They're growin...

The squash I started indoors about a week ago.  Since some already sprouted, I planted six of them outside today.  We may yet get another freeze here as well, but it's not looking like it.   Hope I'm right     :-)

I am new to grow Black Mission figs. I am also in zone 8. Do you cover you fig trees. If so what ones do you cover. I have 3 Mission just starter plants now. Someday will have figs.

I don't cover my figs.  My first winter, I thought I had lost the Mission, but it came back from the roots.  Last year I did lose some tips, you can see from the picture that I have a couple of blackened branches, but overall, the tree did fine.  I suspect it will not get as tall as in a more temperate climate, though time will tell.

Thanks for the Info sure helps planning my figs. All are still in pots will keep them there for some time. They are very small and need time to grow up.
