After reading Genecolins post on his rooting experiment I trotted down to Home Depot to get one of their combination moisture, light and PH meters, $7.98 plus tax.

Not that I was worried about the growing season, but the moisture meter will be great for checking things this winter when the figs are in the garage.  The meter has a wide range in the moisture field, so when the figs are right the meter will read in the low "safe area" for water.

Darned well made little meter for $8.  Two probes on it about 3/4 inch apaart.  No batteries required.  You can use the light meter for indoor plants but probably will never have any use for it in the fig area. 

If you want one you had better rustle yourself on down to HD as they are a seasonal item and will not be restocked until spring.  I had to call two stores to find them, and the second store had only three left.
