Happy you finally got your cuttings!  Hope they grow for you!

The green ones I recently cut, I stripped off all the leaves except for the growth tip, and even a week later, they all look very green and perky!  I know roots take some time, so just because they begin to leaf out, I'm waiting for roots for sure!

Good luck to you!
Suzi

Thanks Suzi!  It's pretty hot out - still at 91 so I'm taking a little break before I go out and do some work out there.

Do you think I should make a fresh cut on the end?

I don't think it would hurt.  We all do that with florist flowers to get them into drinking water again, so stands to reason after those cuttings endured a long trip, that it could help them too.  Others may have differing opinions.

It's hot here too, and I have mine in the shade on the porch in perlite/potting soil with a 2 liter bottle over them all like a mini-greenhouse.

Think I would soak the whole cutting in water overnight to try to rehydrate it then into a cup or pot with your rooting mix and a tent.

Thanks BLB and Suzi, soaking overnight sounds like a good idea, I wonder if I could do that also lol.

I don't have clear cups, I have an assortment of containers from the nursery - I went a bit overboard with the garden:)  Is there a particular size pot that would be best?

I haven't done this in such a long time it's like a whole new experience.

Thanks for the advice

I  used to soak summer cuttings in ice water for at least overnight. It really seemed to make a difference.

Thanks Donald!  I'll add some ice.  The box she sent them in was about 12x15x8 !!  A Lands End Box, so when I got it I was thinking WOW did she send more?  No, just the 2.

I hope they take, the last time I had one from that tree was right after the 9/11 attacks.  They had a bumper crop so she packed them up and sent them on the 10th.  I finally got them about 8 days and most of them were fermenting, There were about 6 or so I was able to eat and savor.

Well congratulations.  Do a 'search' for more cuttings in the fall  ;)    Maybe she didn't want to cut off any fruiting branches.   :)

I think that soaking them in ice is a great idea!  Wish I knew that before this thread, but could come in useful in the future.  Soaking wilted lettuce in ice water brings it right back to life, so probably would work on wilted cuttings too!

You do have a point about mom worrying about cutting fruiting branches.  I was very careful not to take my 20 Catherine's Nacido, and 20 "Wild One," mystery fig cuttings from fruiting branches.  Most came from suckers at the bottom of the tree, and those suckers will simply branch and keep on growing.

It's been a week since mine all got stuck in 4 2 gallon nursery pots, and I know in a month or two I'll have to separate them all and re-pot the survivors in their own nursery pots.

Fingers crossed that yours grow Jo-Ann!

Pot size is not real important provided it isn't a huge pot. Many people root cuttings in tall styrofoam cups, the kind used for a large coffee. Deeper seems to be better, you can bury more of the cutting in the medium hence potential for more roots. Dont forget to tent with a plastc bag.
