Moms cutting in a bag

I think I did this correctly.  Here's the first cutting using the bag method.  It is a 7 1/2 x 2 x 1 cello bag (1" gusset)  I did this a couple of days ago after it has been in water for a week - there were roots starting already from the water.  Of course today I realized I forgot the rooting hormone - oh well.  I do have a product called amazing roots, it's a liquid added to water.  I am watering with this mixture.   used about 80% perlite and 20% pine bark for orchids, I did break up the large pieces.

Here are a few pictures.

I like the bag idea!  Where did you get the bag?  It's so easy to see through!  Happy that things are going well!  This saga may just have a happy ending!  Congratulations!

Well,  I googled the bags, and got a different size on Ebay, but I have over 40 cuttings in process, so this seems like the perfect cheap way to get them going!  You probably put some drainage holes in the bottom/sides, right?

Here is what I got:

You can just stick them in a pot outside and save the trouble of transplanting later. I have about 100 outside right now and 80% have leaves after 3 to 4 weeks.

Dominick!

First, I like your name!  My 8th grandson is named Dominic!  He'll be 3 in August.  He's not into figs at all, and loves to torment his little sister, laugh and throw things!

I have some in pots outside, but I can't see if they are rooted.  I don't mind transplanting if I am sure there are roots!  JMHO...

Yeah I have two terrors-3 and 5. The girl loves the figs like me and the boy has taste buds like his Mom. LOL

The old timers do it this way. After a year if they come back you know. It's rare that they don't.

My dad did it this way with no problems. No worries about humidity or light.

I did the moss, bags and paper towels in bins with moderate to good success. But the hassle is too great. They did well under grow lights in my basement. But then again your in paradise and I need the light to carry them over for the winter.

IMO people worry too much about whether roots are forming. Like Ron Popeil, Set and forget it! ( As long as water is added). ;-)  Obviously they are the most important thing but I would fret over them to the point of not enjoying it.

I seriously hope your cuttings make fig trees for you!

Hello everyone - I have (had) a small biscotti business and used the bags for packaging. I've seen several threads on hear using bags for rooting so I figured what the heck, I'll give it a whirl!

I did not sift the perlite and the bag does not say anything about size. I have to admit (IMHO) I am a lazy gardener. I wanted to try the perlite for rooting but the deep pots I have are a larger diameter then I need so it will use more medium, plus the holes are large and I didn't feel like looking for something to put over the drainage holes. I do most of this stuff late at night - between the bugs and low light in the garage I want to get done ASAP.

I am keeping it in a styrofoam for stability. Hopefully it will thrive.

I'm bumping this up for an up-date.

CELLO BAGS ARE NOT GOOD TO USE!!!!!!!!!!!

I forgot they are biodegradable!!  So the bags are starting to fall apart when handled  :(  :(  :(  :(

Hopefully I could prevent anyone making the same mistake - SORRY!!

That is how one learns!

Thanks for the info!

Good luck

Jo Ann

If you could find some clear 22 oz cups like Dairy Queen etc you might get away with putting the baggies in them and then cross your fingers....Just a thought!

Edit..If you use something like the clear cups it is easy to put holes in there for drainage by using a 16 penny nail heated on the stove.

You made me look, Jo-Ann!  As you know, I ordered some cheap cello bags from Ebay, and stuck a few cuttings in there.  I mostly stuck them next to each other in a larger pot, and thanks for making me look!

So far, no roots appearing, but there are shoots with leaves on the sides of my biggest Sal's Corleone from JD after only a week or so.  The cello bags are in-tact!

Suzi

Cecil, thanks for the tip!

Suzi, if the are REAL Cello they WILL fall apart!

I don't have any shoot yet :(
