Harvey you are a lucky guy when it comes to figs. What a great place to grow them. I'm on your list for chestnuts and hope to hear about ordering them soon.

My UPS driver came shortly after I picked another (delivered the brulee sugar like I saw Frank's wife use!) and I asked him if he liked figs and he said "No, not really. We had a fig tree when I was a kid and I didn't like them."  I said "here, try this one and don't hesitate to just throw it away if you don't like it".  He took a small bite, mostly skin, and told him he was missing the best part.  He took another bite and said "not bad".  He took another bite and said "hey, this is pretty good!".  He ate it all.  He then told me UPS is changing his route because of a new Amazon center and Friday is his last day on my route.  At least I had the chance to make a fig convert out of him, hopefully. :)

harvey, they look wonderful :) i have two going from USDA/UCD cuttings. the leaves were munched by some grasshopper thing.. it won't happen again :) it's not growing too well.. but it's growing. this yr, i'm just not doing things right.

That looks like a great Monstreuse. I have a small one in the ground. I got one or two figs from it last year and they were fantastic. Over the winter gophers completely girdled most of the roots so the tree was no longer anchored. I gave it some care and thank god it is coming back. Maybe I will have some figs next year.

Wow Harvey. Looking good. I am going to be in California later in August (toward the 19th), hope we can meet you if you have time.

That is a very nice looking fig.   I got to taste one of mine that wasn't carried off by critters last year and was impressed.    Does anyone have any idea what the name of this fig is implying?

that's a nice story. few who tasted my figs are surprised how good they are and how well they do in the containers. gave some away, but i really haven't heard back much. i gave one to my friend and he killed his.. few to my in laws and they all died.. i gave one to my lil sister's friend and i heard her friend is seriously thinking about dropping the figs in my front door, ring that bell and run away. i'm surrounded by people who does not have green thumbs. 

Those are the kinds of pictures that tempt one to try figs for the first time, and to grow that fig in particular.

Is this the same plant as Grosse Monstrueuse? I have one of those that I got at a CRFG event.

Does it live up to its name, which I believe means something like Big Fatty?

Yes, mine was giving to me as a cutting with Grosse Monstruese de Lipari.  See NCGR name at http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/acc/display.pl?1002022  Maybe Jon can add this synonym on his variety page.  Baud's small book doesn't list it but he doesn't list that many varieties to begin with.

Bass, I need to go back and look to be certain but I think I have main crop only on this fig.

Harvey, that looks delicious. Though, I can't help but look at the second picture and see a gaping crocodile mouth with its tongue sticking out the side...

This was a two-bite fig but I am not a crocodile :)

I'm reviving this conversation because my Grosse Monstreuse is about to ripen. It's a huge fig! A had. A friend over earlier this week who exclaimed that it looked more like a cucumber than a fig.

Don't you mind spelling it: monstrueuse ? "that is like a monster" in French / monstrous .
Hard to say if the name is because the fig looks weird or if it is supposed to be big . I would vote for it should be big as a monster :) ...

Drat! I knew I had spelled it incorrectly.

Sadly, my first fig was insipid. Huge, but really bland. I think it had gotten bruised, rather than actually ripe.
