We visited Monticello in Virginia on Monday, after being in W. Virginia for a family reunion over the weekend. It was a gorgeous day, sunny and warm. Spent most of the day touring the grounds, looking at the gardens, trees, orchard, and vineyard. Did the evening after hours tour of the house, which was wonderful.
The gardeners were very helpful and friendly, willing to talk at length about the gardens and plants. We didn't get a chance to talk to the man who knew the most about the figs growing there, but we did spend some time taking pictures and walking around looking at all of them. None of the figs were labeled, so if anyone would like to take a stab at identifying the plants in the pictures, have at it!
Most of the figs pictured were against a low garden wall just down from the main vegetable garden. Others pictured were by themselves further down the hill near the vineyard. I didn't get photos with my own camera of the figs up by the house itself, but there were a few up there that were different from those pictures here--a small pinkish fig, and a large, very dark one. I'll see if I can add those later if any pictures were taken.
Had to eat some of the figs, since they were just falling to the ground and being eaten by hornets and birds!
I would heartily recommend a visit to Monticello to anyone with an interest in gardens and history.
