Montserrat pons

I got some great news from Mr. Montserrat pons from Mallorca, Spain.
He now has a website, but he's still working on updating it.
What's even better, you guys will soon enjoy an electronic version of his lovely book.

Monsterrat is a very busy man. He's a fully time pharmacist, as well as caring for his large collection. His collection is larger than UCDavis.

enjoy,

Thanks Bass!

Hey, I saw this on his Llibre page:
http://www.sonmutnou.com/llibre.htm  ]

Próximament...

ESTAM TREBALLANT PER PASSAR EL LLIBRE A FORMAT ELECTRÒNIC

Which [I am pretty sure] means

"We are working to convert the book to electronic format"

That's incredible news

He also informed me that he'll have an English and Spanish version of his site.

Thank you for posting Bass. Tim

Hey Bass,

Has Montserrat mentioned when he's able to have visitors  [days/times]?  I am still trying to see if I could make a day trip there in late April.

I know he welcomes visitors by apointment due to his schedule. I don't think he lives at his farm, if you see  his land, it's in an isolated spot.
I've been to Madrid and canary islands, but never stopped at Mallorca. They do get lots of tourists in the summer.

Cool, thanks!  I found where his pharmacy is located [it's advertised as "Pons e Pons"], but the GPS it points to is about half a block off.  This is right in front of his store

His fields [I just put the GPS point in the center] seem to be some 8km away from it.

It's about 14kms from the airport and quite close to the Marriott Son Antem resort

I'll be in BCN from a Friday afternoon until the following Monday afternoon, so there is a possibility I could go out on the weekend. I've been doing some flight/car checks and have found that it's doable. I'll send him email to ask about it.....If I do manage to go, you can all rest assured that I will take tons of pictures.

I opened the link and clicked on "COM ARRIBAR" and then moved the map of the terrain to the surrounding areas and found that most fields in the area indicated planting in straight lines in grid form.

Does he ever send cuttings to people?  I don't want to bother him if he doesn't but keeps getting bugged for them.

He's a very nice guy but I don't think he mails cuttings out...at least not to North America because of the customs/agricultural/etc., restrictions.

I doubt that he would, he has little to gain and much to lose.  If caught sending plant material into certain countries (maybe even sending outside of the islands), there could be fines, jailtime, maybe a negative impact on his reputation....

His website has come a long way.  I'm glad this thread was bumped.

Montserrat has signed a deal with the local mallorcan government in order to preserve their fig varieties, he will be receiving 18000 Euro a year. His work is finally paying off.
