Morning Harvest

This is what I harvested this morning.  On top is Joe's Jersey.  To the right is Violette de Bordeaux.  To the left is Desert King main crop.  Joe's Jersey was the best.  It was soft, sweet, rich, and peachy.  VDB tends to ripen dry and tough when the temps stay above 100.  It was sweet and had good flavor, but the texture was poor.  DK is ripening almost all of its main crop.  They come out banana yellow.  The DK is sweet, but watery and bland tasting.

Colorful collection of figs. Yum!  Thanks for the pics.

Nice to see some figs this late in season for me.
Thanks for showing the dark ones.  ; )

Thanks.  Hopefully I'll keep harvesting figs here into November.

Joe, your VdB's look about like mine, but a bit bigger. Everything seems a little desiccated this year--I'm hoping it's just because the trees are still so young.

I'm surprised by the Desert King figs. I thought DK only produced a breba crop???

Ken,

That's what I thought too.  I ordered the tree from Burnt Ridge back in 2009.  It barely grew in 2009 and 2010.  This year it took off.  It went from being at my knee at the beginning of the year to now almost 6 feet tall.  It's loaded with main crop figs that are ripening, but their quality is poor.  This is the first crop of figs that it has ever produced, beside a few brebas that it started and then dropped this spring.  Next spring I'm waiting to see what it does.  If it doesn't make and ripen a bunch of brebas then I think they accidentally shipped me something other than DK.

Ditto! My Desert King figs were dark green and red inside and so good!

I really hope they didn't send me the wrong fig. If this is all it produces and there are no high quality brebas to look forward to then this plant is going to fig heaven next year.

Joe, they gave you the wrong fig. Check out figs4fun varieties.....you'll see.

Dennis,

What variety do you think it could be?

Joe's hard to say without seeing the leaf pattern. Could be Galbun.

Here are photos of the leaves:

Whatever this variety is, if this is as good as the fruit gets I don't want it.

That's too bad, Joe, but unless you really need the room immediately for something else, it might be worth giving it at least another year, since it seems figs often improve with the age of the tree.

That 'yellow fig' looks cute - almost like a loquat fruit.

George,

It looks nice but the taste is so bland.  Medium sweetness and nothing else.

Ken,
I'm planning to leave it until next year.  I still have the hope that maybe this is DK and the main crop is just turning out weird this year.
