Moscatel Preto

Had two ripe figs today, jasmine managed to eat one before I could take pics of the one she ate wich was about half the size and the eye was tiny and shut this one had an open eye. Well balanced flavour the smaller fig jasmine ate had darker red pulp than this one.

good for jasmine...looks delicious

Martin got a peters honey with your name on it. I can paint it black if you want

Looking good Nelson,

looking foreward to trying mine in a year or two.

Wow ! Sure looks delicious. Good for you Nelson. It sure would not last long at my household, especially chilling it in the fridge and walla. I thank you in advance for sharing how good this fig, look & taste.  Hopefully I get some MP figs next season. It sure is a good grower here with branching habits too. Comparing this M. Preto with Moscatel Branco(Adriano's), which would be your preference ? I am hoping my MB gets to ripen its main crop with this nice hot weather. Fig size had stagnated and if the weather continues till month end, I may luck out with bountiful surprises.

How big is your tree Nelson ? I am just excited about this variant since it rooted so well & grew robustly for me. The potential promise is just chewing on my enthusiam.

Hey Nelson Paully is really impressed .
Just look at post # 8 and #10 !

Edit: No fair he deleted it.lol

Im sure he has good reason that fig kinda looks like madeira's cousin if the pulp was more dark red.
Jasmine sure new what fig to eat .
and it aint no peters honey ahemmm.

Thanks Nelson for posting the pretty colour fig and sharing with Jasmine. Now I have to pamper the rooted cutting more than before. It is growing well but more pampering will help. I should expect fruiting in a year or two and hope the fruit will look like yours.

I have figs the same as yours that I bought here in Ottawa three years ago at a local nursery and were labeled Brown Turkey, were they labeled wrong or is the fruit similar?

Great looking fig Nelson . Does it taste as good as it looks and how old is the tree ?

Very nice Nelson. I can see Moscatel Preto in my future...

Paul, my tree is 3 years old now as my cuttings failed over winter my father's neighbour gave one of his trees. It is a good branching tree and productive this fig is a good tasting fig and tree is productive. Moscatel branco is in the honey fig category the Moscatel Preto has a unique flavour i cant pinpoint exactly. This particular fig pictured had an open eye wich Is unually not as big.

Akram this tree fruited in its 2nd season & Now in its 3rd had nearly 80 main crop figs wich I removed about 30 in early aug.

jjqp007 this is not a brown turkey, I do have atleast 5 different brown turkey that dont compare to this fig in anyway neither in fig shape size & Flavour and leave on Moscatel Preto is also different this fig was purchased at a Nursery in Minho Region in 2008.

Jimmy definately worth growing in a warmer climate this fig would do even better and in mine. Neighbour said Moscatel Preto produces huge tasty Breba's.

Made my day with this honey & "insanity" flavor to expect. Thanks Nelson. I have been giving  both my Moscatel all the TLC  since I got them. Like Adriano said -- go for the best and one of these days I will. Just a few more medicore figs to junk in my zone. Got to make room to take care a few more excellent ones.

Hey Paul, im with you on that note I too am trying to figure out wich figs in my collection actually produce very good tasting figs in my climate anything that is not up to par will find new homes.

Moscatel Branco is extremely sweet need to leave it on the tree until is starts to turn wrinkley then you will get a sudden blast of sugar that will wake you right up.

The Moscatel Preto is very sweet aswell but has a nice extra something that I cant describe yet need more time to figure it out. Definately a pretty fig with a blue blush.

Martin, the fig that Jasmine ate did have red pulp even I was scratching my head I wish Jasmine would of shared that fig with me lol. I should have a few more ripening shortly as there were a few more starting to swell. But yes it is similar to Black Madeira in Apperance even the leaf shape is similar.

My M. Branca has about 10 main crop figs. I pinched away all smaller/new figs in early Aug. Hopefully they ripen by months end or early Oct. If this hotter weather hangs around, I would be able to sample this one. Sure glad you stayed close to Adriano to be able to get some good info. My tree came from Adriano's courtesy. Sometime this week I will be sampling my Morena and Dusan's Paradiso. The Paradiso figs have turn light brown & the Morena dark but still slightly on the firm side.

Hi Paul, I was lucky enough to sample a Moscatel Branco fig when I visited Adriano last week. My M. Branco plant has been a slow grower not much growth in the last 2 season's it did produce a couple figs this year but I pulled them off next year this plant will get some extra tlc.

Nelson I meant my tree was labeled wrong since the fresh BT figs I buy are  different and so are the pictures I find on line. You say you have 5 different BT,  I have been looking for the English BT do you have it? and would you part with a few cutting later this winter.

Thx

Here are the Moscatel Preto Leafs there are 3 leaf shapes on this tree single lobed 3, lobed and some 5 lobed.

The single and three lobed leaves look similar in shape and size to Black Madeira.  My BM has not put out 5 lobed leaves yet, but it may as it matures.  The fruit on this tree looks similar to Black Madeira also.

Hi Joe you are right very similar to Black Madeira, I Have also not seen any 5 lobed leaves on BM yet but the Figo Preto from Point loma has all single 3 lobed and 5 lobed as well these 3 are extremely similar in apperance even unripe figs are same shape & Size before they start ripening. Possible a relative of BM? But this one does produce Breba's and they are large.

That's a great looking fig and it has a great color to it also.  Does it need a lot of heat hours to ripen?

Its my 1st year growing this fig so I dont have too much time with it in my hands to know for sure. The weather has been rather cool in the last two weeks and these figs have been ripening with good flavour. So far it ripened earlier than Figo Preto need more time to see just exactly when main crop starts to ripen but so far I would have to say early september as my father had already eaten a few figs from this tree early last week.

Last year my fathers neighbour had main crop ripening late september probably because he left all the breba on the tree.
