Moscatel Preto

I got several cuttings from a dear friend but this is the only on to root.

syn. Bêbera
Might be the same as Sue's Aberbebera

Information I found on line.
Moscatel Preto (syn. Bêbera). Described and illustrated by Bobone (1932). Known as
Moscatel Preto at Coimbra, and Bêbera at Cacela and on the island of Madeira.

Hey gene looking good, if this is the same Moscatel preto I have that I got from my fathers neighbor it is not the same as sues , leaves will look different shortly and gigs are somewhat bluish in color originated from northern Portugal and is extremely good tasting and is also in the university of algarve collection there are 3 distinct moscatel preto figs in Portugal.

Nelson, my Moscatel Preto tree that was rooted last year Feb. have 4 figs. My tree is about 15" tall, top pruned & it had 4 branches. This is an amazing feat for this variant. I have top pruned the 4 branches that are at least 5inches long and they are now sprouting 9 side branches. This is awesome. This is a very easy to root variant too. Grows well. I got all 3 cuttings rooted last year. One died during up-potting and the other given away. I like the fact that you have described it as very good & it is an outdoor tree with no protection. Looks like I got work to dig out another tree to plant this one in-ground. Thanks Nelson - a good find & sharing.

Gene, with your kind of climate you may even get to sample its figs. Keep us posted.

Paul my climate is nothing special yet this fig ripens to perfection one of my best figs a pretty fig also. It's shape is similar to black Madeira but different in color last year started ripening 1st week of September until early November the plant was purchased in 2009 and produced Brebas and main crop the following season for the previous owner.

Thanks for the info Nelson. Sounds like a great fig. Paul I like the way you describe it growth. Wish me luck.

Just Great.

Now I have another fig to acquire.

AND

only room for about eight!

Paul, Nelson,

Do you guys know if anyone south of border has your Moscatel Preto? I would love to try them down here. It seems lot of good figs in Canada have hard time reaching down here. Import/export regulation doesn't help either.

Pete

Way to go Gene your young plant looks like its on its way .

gene,

any update on this guy?

Pete, I'll try to run it down later today when I water and take a couple of photos. Hoping I see figs.

OK Pete, I dug it out and found that it hasn't grown much this year. It's a little taller than it was in the picture I took last year. It's still in a 1 gallon pot and although it was in a sunny location it is being shaded by trees that grew much faster than it did. I will move it soon to a more sunny location to see if I can get it going. It's looking healthy but need to grow. I just been too busy lately caring for the wife and her replacement knee. She's healing and it won't be long before I can turn the house over back to her.

Gene, perhaps the little plant will be happier in a 2 or 3 gal pot. Try locating plant in
spot with good morning sun and some shade in the afternoon. What I like most is set
pot about 2" deep soil and I find the plants love it. Hope Linda continue to progress well
in recovery.

Paully, thanks for the well wishes for Linda. In the photo you can see other trees on the right edge of the photo. I moved around 30 young plants in what is a box of sorts made out of tin on all four sides. I use it to acclimate young trees to the sun. When I put all the trees in the box they were just breaking buds and most were only 6 to 12 inches tall. I put fence boards across the top with 2 inch spacing between them. That way they are only in the sun for a few minutes and then in shade. This is repeated all day as the sun moves across the sky. Every week I remove 1 board and move the boards apart giving them more sun. I repeat this a few more times until the are ready for full sun. Since I start this in Feb. the box can be totally covered to protect them on cold and frosty nights. In march we have our spring winds which can play havoc on the little trees, so by being in the box they do not take a hard buffering from them. It's a great set up, but the MP didn't keep up with the others. They are all due an up potting as soon as I finish another project that's on the front burner. I will have pictures shortly of that project.

thanks for the pix gene. i was thinking that same thing paul was saying..  not about your Moscatel Preto, but my plants in general. first yr, i was in hurry to see them grow so i moved them rapidly to large container and they grew very fast. then last two yrs, i've kept my cuttings all in 1 gal container for a yr. the growth has been very slow. once they are moved into 3 gal, it continue to grow again. i went and got some 3 gal pots today to move some of my 1 gal plants tomorrow.

my Moscatel Preto is now ready to move to cups.

I don't normally have to keep plants in 1 gal pot longer than 60 days. Those that do are usually
meant for friends or I have as spares. The roots seem to grow out from 1 gal pots very fast.

they do grow out very fast. about 3 month and they are at the edge, in 4-5 months, they start circling. i should up pot more frequently, but lack of fig money, and space keeps mine in 1 gal for a yr. biggest problem with keeping them that long in small container is that the roots get tangled up pretty bad, and repotting with bare root takes some time. but they seems to do fine. oh.. yeah.. with restricted root, they don't grow to 4-5 feet like people who are up potting quickly.
