Most you've spent...

Was thinking about the rarity and cost of a Sal Corleones fig and this occurred to me.  What is the most you've spent for 1 particular plant/cutting/scion?  I know there are different sizes, ie, 1 gallon vs 5 gallon vs 25+ gallons.  But what was the most you spent on one particular variety (name of variety) and the size of the pot it was in.

Looking on mine, I spent 24$ + shipping on a 1 gallon Violet de Bordeaux from Edible Landscaping.  Not sure what the shipping was exactly, as I had a few others I ordered at the same time.  I know I could have gotten a smaller one elsewhere, but almost all of mine are small, I figured I might get a few figs this year with a bigger starting size.

Jackster,

It was about $50 for a 1 gallon Sal's Corleone from Belleclare, which turned out to be a barely rooted cutting. Two and a half years later it is starting to be a "plant". Still haven't tasted it.

59.00 plus tax for a sals of coroleone in little more than a styrofoam cup.  I was torn between that and a malta black.  When I told the owner (of belleclares nursery) I wasn't crazy about celeste (the supposed parent of malta black), he steered me towards the soc.  Even with the unusual interest in sals of coroleone I consider the decision a mistake.

I spent $6.00 for my Sal's Corleone cuttings (3)

I cut them in 1/2 =6 cuttings 6" long, out of that I have two healthy SC plants, of those two that made it one has 5 figs on it

So I guess I'm just a cheap skate!

But a very happy Cheap Skate!

I really like to call myself "thrifty"

Nothing at all wrong with being, as I like to call it, 'frugal.'
When money is tight, you learn to watch where its going :)

Thanks Dan,

And yes we are looking forward to shaking the Man's hand and getting to know him a little better next week (we are ready for a dose of that Cajun coffee)And from what I hear, a dose of JR

I know you ask what was spent on one plant but if you look at what was spent to obtain one successful plant. I have 21 growing pecan trees on my place. I started 25 years ago planting pecan trees. To establish the 21 I can not tell you how many I have purchased. I can not divide the 21 into the amount spent to establish the 21 because I do not really want to know. Number 22 was killed by my wife and her lawn mower this year. I am sure I will purchase another one to replace it. I hope my new hobby, fig trees are not going to be so expensive.

JA,

Have an idea, replace the lawnmower-ed pruned Pecan tree with a nice Fig tree, or plant 22 fig trees, and tell the lawnmower operator to be xtra careful around them fig trees, on second thought disregard all I have said here....HAHA

jstall, how much can a pecan tree cost? i can get a great tree here for 10 bucks, like 4 feet tall, and vigorous.

If I want it bad enough & can afford it -- NO problems especially when it comes from an excellent source. Its just like going on a holiday which cost alot more. In my opinion, growing a fig tree & reaping its harvest gives so much intangible benefits, thus no problems in buying at that 40 plus price where infact I paid much more for a Monrovia Mission.

Cecil, that was a great investment. Sometimes one never knows how an opportunity can have so much sought after value. Now, what would you want for a trade ?? Just kidding. Let us know how your SC taste.

If you can mow you pecan tree, your lawnmower is way too big or your treei is way too small.

HAHA Hi Paully

If my SC does well next year, I'll talk turkey with ya
Like I said somewhere else, that bad boy is staying in the 3 gal pot next year unless it outgrows that, then I'll pot up somewhat (fig pot not that other stuff)
(Turkey meaning trade)

The mower is big. I found out it does not take much of a hit to kill a young pecan tree.

JA,

You can join myself & sandsquid in the mower pruning club!

Speaking of Sand, we have not heard nothing out of him this year have we?

Tree died, not even trying to grow back?

Hey Jackster I LOve that sense of Humor!

Jackster,
never ran over a fig tree of mine cause there in pots!
But i did do a little dance a time or 2 tripping over the little ones at night on patio.
I did year back run over a maple tree on parkway with riding mower but heck them are a dime a dozen, a fig tree would make me miserable if i ran over.
But never say never i might move to warmer state in 10 years or so and just have that chance perhaps.

Martin,

Careful, the Japanese maples are quite expensive as compared to 'any' old maple.  For some of the bigger specimens, they make fig trees look cheap :)

Only thing I've bumped with my mower (knock on wood) was a bit of a rain litre.  Oh, and I've nailed a few dog toys (mostly spongy balls, or tennis balls w/ rope on them).  Dog kind of leaves them around, and when the grass gets high, cant see them sometimes.

Always fun to hear a thump and watch a ball shoot out the side of the mower :)

Hey Cecil, Santas Claus coming to town early -- one wish granted. Let me know what you like. If I have spares or cuttings, you can have it. No kidding. I may have a SC coming my way, all legi with papers in Dec. Email me privately.

Dieseler, How is your Jolly Tiger doing? I was thinking about taking the plunge for one and am curious about how vigorous it is.
