Marius,
What varieties do you have planted in-ground?

LOL about the wife comment.

We have plenty of room for you here in Texas, come on down.

Oh so sorry Marius . One of the reasons we bought a home in FL. Hopefully soon to be our "only" home.
Got a chuckle about the wife/fig comment !!

Calvin,i do have about 30 varieties inground,around my house:hardy chicago,marseille vs black.salem dark,salem white,black greek,florea,red and yellow lebanese,some afghan varieties,bayernfeige violeta,giant black german,tacoma violet,black spanish,sweet george,duemane,celeste belleclare(very hardy),nero600,pastiliere,sultane,black bethlehem,danny's delite + some other no names...

Marius, do you protect the in ground trees during the winter at all?

No,not anymore, Mike.Cost to protect them is too high...I prune them in fall for cuttings, and everything larger than 2" in diam, stays inground for the whole winter...

Here its warm and in the spring i over dried my loquat tree and it died.
we have same trouble(dying trees) from different weather spectrums.

i am crying over my loquat tree for 2 weeks no, did the scrape test and the bark is brown like terracota.

all the best for us..... at least were past 2012 LOL

I see Ohio is 5a,5b,6a depending on location. About what zone are you?

What was your low temp this year?

hang in there brother....you will be fine

Calvin,was 0 fahrenheit(-18 C) for 3 days in a row,then,betwheen 15 and 30 fahrenheit for the rest of the winter.

Marius im sorry to hear this. hope it all works out for you. Enjoy your coffee.

What a heartbreaking sight...so sorry to hear and see the results of that drop in temperature. My heart goes out to you Marius.

Marius, sorry for the damage. You did ask the right question, though: "Why am I still in Ohio?" Now you need a different answer. ;-))

Really sorry to see that Marius.

Sorry Marius, I feel your pain.

I planted a Smith in ground here very late in the season and knew I might be taking a risk.  It was a nice healthy 3 to 3.5 foot tree.  Well, I was very good about covering the young tree every night it was suposed to get below 40F.  Much to my dismay, it suffered from freeze damage on approximately 3/4 quarters of the top growth.  Guess I can't complain, it is still alive and showing new growth.  I have a much better appreciation for what farmers go through with weather.  Even us with our "simple" hobby have ups and downs with weather that give us really bad days.

Marius,
Time to move south. Come on down. Although I'm here in VA in z7 and I'll be up all night watching the thermometer as all my figs went out last weekend and may need to be covered or brought in if the temperature takes a dive like the weather guy says. Moving 253 plants plus my bananas, etc. is something I'm hoping not to do.
I sure hope your plants recover quickly.

Mine have never been below 32 degrees and they are currently covered in figs. Will I loose the figs if I get a mild freeze?

Does anyone have experience with this? thx.

Marius you are not alone. Same thing happened with my trees this morning. Trunks of several of my 1-2 years old plants have died to the soil level. Vey heartbreaking. No damage on the in ground plants, since they have not broken dormancy yet. I hope this winter ends soon.

Navid.

mnedelcu: Whats your hardiest cultivar in your opinon? Sorry about you loss.

You just got to love Cleveland weather,
85 one day,25 another day!!
Hang in there!
Things can only get better!!!!

Hardiest....is Florea and an unknown serbian varietie, these two have 0-zero die back,but...they are planted 3 ft from my house! All the rest are...feathers in a wind,God didn't create them for 0 to 15 fahrenheit....you should protect them every winter, and it's gonna cost you money, time and a LOT of work!!When everything is done, april is here, you uncover the trees, waiting for brebas crop, and one or two nights like yesterday....asta la vista, baby!!
I did this for 3 years in a row and when i found out that even my neighbor's dog is laughing at me every fall and spring...i let it go...Good luck to you,guys!!...time to move south...

Sorry, Marius.  Hopefully May will end the low temps.  Mine are still in the garage but starting to leaf out and it'll be in the 30s 2 more nights this week.  I may have to find some affordable lights.  The lanky growth is very fragile and I hate it.  We all need to move to Texas.

Hang in there this spring has been real cold so far for many.  ; )

Well, here I am at 3:22AM watching the clock and thermometer. It's 34.3 degrees. No wind thankfully. If the temp drops another 1 degree I'll start hauling stuff in, bunching stuff together and throwing sheets, etc. over everything. Nothing on Hulu or Netflix left to watch. I really miss my hoop house tonight.

Now it's 5:32 and I've thrown sheets and bunched what I could as temp is 31.8 at the present time. At best the sheets and bunching will buy me a degree or two. Bummer. I'm going to be very nervous in about 2 hours when I go back out and look. I'm hoping the heat from the thermal mass of the concrete will give me another degree or 2 but clear skies and low dew point so-- if I don't get a frost I'll be one lucky SOB.
Thankfully still no wind.
