Hey folks,I'm about to move my fig trees out of their current home(apartment patio) to a house with a backyard in the next week or two. Currently the figs receive 4-5 hours of afternoon sun. The backyard will offer full sun for most of the day as it has no trees. I'm going to drill 1/2" holes along the lower side of the pots and bury them 1/3 of the way into the ground. Do y'all see any possible issues with this? Is it too late to get the figs to use the holes to "reach" into the soil for extra water/nutrients? I'm located near Dallas, Texas. Weather is starting to creep into the 80s.
i am not sure if its too late, depending on the fig variety, the roots should be able to reach the ground by the end of the season. As far as too much sun, no such thing with figs. the more the merrier. just be sure to water as needed.
When growing outside, I put in shade for a week, half sun for a week, and then full sun. The "week" can be 4-7 days depending on the weather. I would say 4 hours to full sun would be fine.
It should not be too late at all. The roots will exit the holes and soon. I planted figs in partially buried 4g buckets for the first time in PA last year, they were mostly transplanted from 1g pots to the buckets. I planted them at the end of May and there were large roots exiting every hole in 10 buckets when I dug them up at the beginning of November. You should not water inside the buckets but around them to get the roots searching for water there. And if they are used to afternoon sun the plants should do fine going to full sun
Thanks y'all!
