Come on down...I am about 30 miles east of Tampa. If you are not used to the heat and humidity, then late July and August will be brutal the first year until your blood thins out a bid. I was born here and even I hate late July and August. During those times, I work until about noon and then come inside until around 4pm. Oh, and in west central Florida, it will rain like you never seen before around 5pm for an hour. You will think the world is coming to an end....especially with the lightning and thunder. An hour later, they are gone and evening is very nice.
As for the figs, anything out LSU will do well. These are LSU Gold, purple, Improved Celeste, O'Rourke, Tiger, and a few others. Others that do well here are Chicago Hardy, Scott's Black, Black Mission, Conadria, etc. You have to be wary of anything with an open eye as the rain/humidity will cause them to sour quickly. The great thing is the long growing season. I start picking figs usually in June through about late November/December.
When you get here, give me a shout. I have lots in cups and containers that I will share with you.
