Moving up from cups to pots

First, I would like to thank everyone for helping me and offering advice. I know I have been starting a lot of topics with all the mistakes I am making... I really do appreciate all the help everyone here has given me and I am sure I would not have even got this far with out it.
I have been looking through the archives and online. I am trying to determine if I should move up from cups to 1 gallon pots. I know I have been having issues keeping these cuttings going. I have been taking the advice of everyone on this board seriously and I did start enough cuttings that I can experiment on some cuttings with recommendations. I have noticed that the growth has slowed on the cuttings and some have younger leaves that are turning yellow and droping. I have read that this could be because there is not enough root growth to support them or maybe related to the underwatering issues I had last week, or even that they might be root bound already. I did take the advice of the people on the board and I have covered all the pots with foil to protect the roots from sun light damage. I wonder if I did it to later though. I have noticed I do not see much root activity around the outside of the containers like you do when they first root and you see the fat white roots. They are all mostly brown and a bit thinner, which I read is not necessarily bad.  I used mostly 2 liter soda bottles and a few 1 liters and even a 16 oz water bottle. Do you think the cuttings in smaller containers would benefit from moving up? Would it be an issue since it is only the middle of February and the earliest they would be going outside is the end of April. Here are some pictures.
These are the older cuttings.

Here is the  cutting in the 16oz water bottle. This one was one of the ones that was drooping from underwatering. It has perked up and recovered since I watered it, but it also dropped some leaves and the remaining leave still look a little sad.

roots from the water bottle cutting.

Take anything I say with a shaker of salt since I'm new to this whole cutting thing

The last pic to me shows that one could be potted up.

The one above that looks like it has a little more room to expand.

I agree with the assessment of not going out until April and being a little early.

I have seen some say roots like space and others say they like to be tight.

But my knowledge of figs can fit in a thimble with space left for a thumb.

By the way, I'm jealous they look really really good!

In that last picture, I see some live roots and some dead roots.  The dead ones are to the right and are brown but clear-ish looking, totally stuck to the side of the bottle.  The live roots that I see look good.

Your plants aren't going to get root-bound for another couple (or few) months, so I wouldn't let that be your motivator for transfer.

I had a serious issue with early transfer on a couple of my figs.

That link has all the info, and the downside of what can happen - I early-transferred 1 Marseilles Black VS and 3 Conadria.  I know I lost the MBVS, and I believe I lost one of the Conadria in that transfer.

What I found through the year - for me, at least - is that the growth of the plant was about the same or better if left in the cup during the year, and the survival rate when transferring was much greater if I held off as long as possible to swap.  And when I say "much greater", realistic numbers are:

I lost approximately 2 out of 5 plants if transferred too soon, "too soon" being less than 4 months after initial rooting ... and I only lost about 1 out of 10 if I waited until (at least) 6 months from initial roots forming.

I'm guessing those numbers would have been even higher had I just let the plants go all year long in the cups and just repotted the following spring.

Repotting is a pretty invasive/disruptive procedure for a young plant or cutting, especially if you knock all the soil off the roots.

I read your previous post from last year.

Instead of tents, would you think a humidifer would act in a similar manner.

I plan on adding that to the room I'm using once they out grow the bins they are in. That way I can control the humidity to a degree. That way I lessen the amount of air saturation when its time to transfer.

Then I may lay out an artificial greenhouse with metal gate posts and clear paint tarps covered with the humidifier, open and closing to vary the amount of natural air included.

Thanks guys, I read your topic. I was prepared to wait intil it atleast got closer to spring. I just got a little freaked out by the the leaves dropping and some of the roots not looking good. I was thinking if I avoided the over watering they won't look like that. Do you think the sun exposure or maybe underwatering would shivel them like that?

@Dom, think about it from the pot smoker's perspective.  If you want to get high, do you light a bundle of weed in the corner and sit in the room, or do you smoke directly from a joint, bong or pipe?

If it were me, I'd pick the joint/bong/pipe, it takes less effort to and energy to accomplish the end goal (and much faster, at that).

EDIT:  I just realized I said this to someone with 'nypd' in their name.  LOL ;)  It fits, though (coming from a non-smoker, fwiw)

I think keeping the trees in a low-volume space with controlled, persistent humidity versus a high-volume area with less-controlled persistent humidity is the best option.  JMHO.

@71GTO, I can only speculate.  :(

Um.. What's pot? I never heard of a bong! Is  that the sound the bell makes from the Gong Show? :-P

I got what your saying, but if the space warrants, I say why not?

My space is 7x5x8, so a humidifier may not be bad with a window-small bathroom not in use

By the way, if its not yours who cares how you do it, as long as you feel good!

;-) I'm retired by the way! So smoke 'em if you got 'em!

Dominick I would not pot up anything at this point.  I just took some rooted cuttings and put them into styrofoam cups 16 oz. These cuttings will stay in the cups untill around mid june. I will have roots coming out the holes in the cups and being air pruned off by the time I take them out.
Now about the humidifier. It would work in a small area possibly enclosed with 3-6 mil plastic tarp. Get yourself a  plastic rack and seal it up with the plastic then put the humidifier on the bottom shelf. place infront of the window. remember at one point someone came up with the baggie method for the first time. Figs are about trial and error we learn alot more from our failures then our successes.

I have to laugh, no offense to anyone.

Sometimes I may have too much too say and things get lost.

This started with me giving my 2 cents about something I'm new too and saying what I will do, that I think some of you believe that I am potting up soon.

Nope-Just started seeing roots and putting into 16 oz clear cups. Clearly months away.

The humidifier was just a suggestion if they out grew the plastic bins they are in and then saturate the air in the room so as not to kill the started cuttings.
