White mulberry is considered a weed around here.  None of the mulberries on them down here get half as large as what you have pictures and really taste like crap.  If you still want, I can make some arrangements, there are five dozen trees within a block of me (wish I could cut them all down).

when i was living in flushing, there were good number of mulberry trees in kissena park. that must been around 80-84. during the summer, few of my friends will go there to climb trees and clean them out. i remember them to be very dark black mulberries.

we used to fish there also.. miss that place. i'm sure it's not the same any more.

I have a dwarf Mulberry the tree is only a couple feet tall in a pot and producing tiny dark fruits that are very tasty. Got it last year from Logee's. I'm sure a web search will result in several nurseries that carry good productive varieties. I also have a couple "wlid" trees in my back yard area that are fruiting right now too. There is a white and and a couple darks. Last year I had a clump of them removed to allow for more sun in my yard. I am constantly fighting the seedlings coming up as weeds everywhere.

Thanks everyone for all the responses i had told my dad that the white ones where sour i remember this from years ago but he insists on telling me otherwise Jason if theres a way you can get me a whole bunch of cuttings i would greatly appreciate it from what i remember there almost like grape vines right ? if so i guess you could load a little box with them and pete yes i know kissena park my old bosses parents live down the block actually that was my old bosses stomping grounds you might even know him its the lopez family. And BlB i dont want to purchase something only because if he doesnt like them its going to be a waste of money besides i like trying to grow things from starters and cutting etc its a little chalenge for me ........Jason if you could let me know what the shipping cost/box etc and i will pp you ....PS i have some unknowns if you need them i will cut and ship just pm me your shipping info there green and black/brown i havent seen them ripe yet thanks again everyone

I enjoy mulberries, they're usually one of the first fruit trees to bear in my garden. Here's two varieties that i grow on one tree. The white one is Greece, the dark is Collier. I also have Illinois Everbearing, Pakistan, and a wild one i collected for it's taste.

Yep I like mulberries!

I do remember me climbing mulberry trees in my old country

(I was very young then!).

Recently we had a nice 'weeping' mulberry tree (dark fruit) just next to my driveway.

Me (and many birds) used to pick quite a few and enjoy.

Sadly, as the new the owners moved in; they cut it down....

I have also loved them since childhood. We just had a huge one cut down. I hated to do it, but it was so tall there were very few I could reach to pick. All they did was make a horrible mess for two months. Luckily a nice sapling is already coming up from the trunk and I hope to keep it pruned to a reasonable height.

LOL No challenge growing Mulberries they literally grow like weeds. The only challenge is waiting for your little seedling to mature enough to produce. The white ones are very tasty too. In fact some people prefer the more mild taste. The miniature I got from Logees is a little pricey but no wait for fruit and much more manageable in terms of space. I see Bass chimed in on this thread, that's good as he is probably the most knowledgeable person on here when it comes to Mulberries.

Thanks for all the info guys i greatly appreciate it im hoping someone has something good to send if they grow like weeds i guess i wont have any problems like i said i have alot of local unknowns i can cut and send just let me know and Dave i have seen that literature already thanks for it though ill copy and paste it as pdf just to have

Tony, happy to ship you some cuttings.  I'd export a couple of 30' tall trees if I could, they're ugly as hell.  The fruit looks more like what Bass shows above (the white ones), but they occasionally have a dark one here or there (fluke?).  Mostly are white.  Happy to share.  PM me your info, I've cut off more branches than I can count over the last several weeks.

Awesome i will pm you now thank you

Hey everyone TONYSAC her just wondering if anyone else could get a hold of some mulberry tree cuttings Jason is supposed to send me white/green maybe someone has purple ...maybe you want some local unknowns ?? Thanks everyone

Just a lil bump

Slightly off topic, but also slightly related....

Has anyone ever grow the Mulberry and Fig relative called: Cudrania tricuspidata, commonly know as Che or, Chinese mulberry?  I once thought about trying this tree, and was going to buy one from Edible Landscaping, but never went through with my plans.

Interested to know if this a decent fruit to grow.

Frank

Frank,

I grafted a couple spring of  2011 to Osage Orange root stock, but doubt I will see fruit for a while. I have seen folks post about their trees dropping the immature fruit each year and have yet to see a mature fruit after 7? or so years. Jon has some nice images of the fruit on his site so maybe he will respond. I have heard you either really like them or really don't. If i recall it was stated should really let them almost over ripen or they don't have much flavor.
 Tony,
If you remind me next winter I should be able to get you some Illinois Everbearing mulberry. I don't find mulberry east to root, but very easy to graft. I have some other cultivar trying presently by both cutting and graft to my I.E. tree. I am not sure about green cutting I have never tried to root them.

A note regarding both  Che and several cultivar mulberry from U.C. Davis just as you can figs right on the same order.

strudeldog...

Thanks for the information.  I've only seen them in photos, but guessing that if these trees were decent, many more folks would be growing them.  The sound like problems to grow, and after all the effort, you might not get fruit.

Again, thanks.

Frank

Strudeldog,

I was able to root 1 Shangri-La cutting and 2 Pakistan cuttings last year from US Davis. They grew up 8 feet in height during the summer, but have frozen during the winter. Pakistan froze completely; Shangri-La froze at the base and re-sprouted in the spring just to be killed for ever by a late freeze. If grafted, on hardy varieties, scion acquires additional cold hardiness though. A nursery on the west coast is selling seedlings of Morus Alba(tartarian mulberry), and they are not expensive. They sell them as rootstock.

Thanks strudeldog if my mind allows me to remember i will remind you thanks for the offer :)

There is a white mulberry near me from Iran. It's at the Bernardo Winery. It is said to be the sweetest most fabulous of mulberries. I was going to get cuttings this winter but heard they were difficult to start? My friend is from Iran and he recognized the tree and is anxious to get a start from it too.

Funny story, the manager of the winery was in her electric cart came around a corner and saw 4 guys, 2 in the tree shaking it and 2 on the ground with a tarp to catch the fruit. When confronted they said they thought it was a public park could take the fruit. They had 4 huge baskets full. I don't know if she let them take the fruit or not.

I failed on rooting Mulberry last year and am currently trying Kokuso No. 20, Shangri La, Middleton, Geraldi Dwarf, and Pakistan again this year. I am trying a liquid rooting hormone this year, but I think I kept them too dry last year. I am a terrible rooter (is that a word?) even on figs, my success rate is pretty abysmal. On the Mulberry and Pomegranates I am trying to root I am putting multiple cuttings in a tall 5 gal pot, and so far Shangri La and Middleton look good, but the others are just breaking bud. I hope there is rooting going on underground. last year I show good top growth, but they faded as there was no root activity. Maybe those that have better success rooting mulberry can share their methods here. I have never tried the Sphagnum moss, baggy, or other methods we detail here on figs, and if that’s what it takes I will try it.  I grafted 1 or 2 of each cultivar to my Illinois Everbearing as well, and I believe they all took, but then a late freeze knocked everything back. Even the I.E. itself lost all the foliage and many small limbs. The tree itself leafed back, but the grafts had not leafed back 2 weeks ago when I was last at my planting about an hour away. At least the I.E. itself will make a comeback, which is more than I can say about some of my persimmon.

I thought you could just root mulberries grapes and any other small vine type in just water ??

I grow a Che tree, it is not difficult to grow at all. Got mine from Edible Landscape after I saw Bass's tree. Mine is in a pot awaiting the day I can convince my wife to allow me to remove the apple tree in the front of our house so I can plant my Che tree. Sadly, in the pot, the fruit does fall off each year. As I understand it, that happens in ground too for the first few years. Also while we are talking about Mulberries I removed a small group of Mulberry trees last year to allow more sun in my yard for figs and veggies. My next door neighbor just had his cut down today as well. Yipee, more sun, less food for my tortoises though.

Hey BLB any scraps off the neighbors tree that you might wanna send my way for a trade ?
