Multiple cuttings in one pot. How to get them out?

I was up potting from cups today and realized that I had five cutting in a one gallon pot. One is leafed pretty good. Thee more have leaves and I'm not sure how big the roots are.

I was in a hurry to do something  with the cuttings were starting to leaf when I got them.
Is it safe to disturb the soil that much taking them out. One has a four inch new shoot already.
I 'would have given some pictures but the file was too big. Anyway They are an Unknown Italian purple.

Maybe submerge the cup in room temperature water to allow the soil to loosen from around the roots? Might break less roots that way. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Assuming you have them placed in a circular fashion towards the edge of the pot and if there are enough roots I would slice them off like I would with a cake or pie.

Make sure the knife is evenly placed between the cuttings. Carefully removed the cut cuttings with soil and all and place into a new pot and gently fill with new soil all around it.

That's how I do it.

Rafed that's exactly what I need! Been hankering for something all night but that's it! Now I want pie, apple pie, warmed with vanilla ice cream on top.

Vince,

Go for it bro. You earned it.

Submerge the container in a water bath (5 gallon bucket or basin of water) and gently wash away all the old potting material... carefully replant in new containers.  A brief description that was posted on a earlier topic. Good Luck.

Well, thanks for all the helpful tips. I.ll give it a go tomorrow. It should go fine. They look like strong growers.

If you can, wait until they go dormant. You could very likely kill all them trying to separate them and if they still have tender roots.

I did the separation the other day. As it turns out ; the roots were were not entwined that bad. I only had to untangle two cuttings. The rest had leaves sprouting, but no roots. I put those into clear cups, so I can watch them.

Mike

good you checked and there are not much roots. i would move them to 1 cutting per cup or container. less work later on.
