MVS Black 2011 & 2012

I have an in-ground as well as a potted MVSB. The potted tree ripened is ripening its fruits whereas the in-ground tree is lagging by about 4 weeks. This was the much better and bigger of the two and only two to date (10/30) that we have eaten. This one ripened to this point by accident. As I removed the clothespins and newspaper, I thought "Oh No!" because it appeared to be dried up and rock hard.Luckily this one was not.

Yes I had a couple of over ripe fruits yesterday,on my in ground tree, and they are exquisite tasting at this point ;ate in the Fall.
It does not matter that the leaves are hanging dead on my tree, the  fruits continue to ripe, till end of December.Atreano also continue to ripe trough November, and they are very tasty!

Herman,
Thanks for the information about the extended season for MVSB and Atreano. For the health and future prosperity of my trees, I was considering knocking off the unripened figs. I may give those two a chance. If they ripen into December and through the end November respectively, them I am curious to find out what happens here.

Yes JD,They do.
If you suspect you have very young fruits at the tip of branches, remove those to help the rest, because those very young will not ripe.
Also pinch a new the growing tips of plant to feed the fruits better.

Interesting growing tips on MVSB. It was not as prominent last season. These red veins are all over the new growing tips. I suppose this is the second growing "flush". I also fertilized about two weeks ago.

JD, man you deserve a metal for your excellent photo skills!  I love seeing your pics!  Very nice indeed!

Keep em coming JD unlike the "above poster" and his suitcase full of UcDavis pictures he has been promising to post . ROFL

Gosh, it looks like a tiny root emerging from below the growth.  Could it be?
Suzi

Suzy,

That is the remnant piece of a broken young shoot. The nice shoot in the focus of the picture is a replacement of the unlucky one.

In my previous message I was referring to the bigger stump. Now I see the white thing too, but do not think that could be a root.

I picked/cut all of the tips on all of the trees that were taller than I am. Although I like the photo, I will need to pinch it again and again. MVSB is vigorous and wants to grow tall. I want it no taller than 6'1".

JD ,if you Emailed me today ,I deleted it by mistake,so please send it again!

These red veined tips are more prevalent and prominent this year than on any other fig tree in my collection at any other time. In my worst-best Joe Cocker voice...

They are so beautiful to me...look and seeeee...everything I hope for...is that those green unriped fruit become the ripe fruit I neeeeed...
So I took a few more photographs of the various red veined tips.

Thanks Dennis. It has been overcast here for the past few days and the sweet spot for this camera seems to be cloud filtered light.

Will do Martin. It has been a beautiful tree to photograph. I won't hold my breath but I do hope that the fruit will be very good. Along with you and many others, I have learned that red veins are an indicator for a fruit with dark skin, with dark pulp, and with better than average taste.

Caveat (9 June 2012): Jason (satellitehead) noted that there are a few outliers in which red veins are not an indicator of a pretty good dark fig with dark pulp. Concerning red veins indicating dark pulp, he wrote "My Beall (UCD) doesn't have dark pulp/flesh (tannish/yellow on many), and neither does my Brown Turkey (pinkish flesh)".

I'm seeing the same phenomenon on the other side of town, Jimmie. It makes you want to reach out and touch them. Much prettier than the varicose veins I usually get to look at. :)

PS: Bring your camera next time you visit and make my trees look as pretty as yours.
