MVS Black 2013

This grounded MVSB is the most productive fig tree that I have...by far. The figs are good and just a few (two) have ripened to date. So this is a good mid-season, transitioning from Celeste, steady, frequent, tasty, slightly better than average figs. Thanks Vasile.

I took this one (today) too early but to my surprise, it was much better than expected. Strange neck...

candy

as always your picture makes the fig looks much more tempting. i was able to save 2 cuttings from winter rooting on this one. will be next yr before i'll see the ripen fig. does all MVSB looks that way? yours look as if the pulps look like clear red candy.

Pete,

No, they don't all look the same. It depends upon when you pick them. The next few will be better protected and allowed to wrinkle and they will be much darker because the sugars will have started to concentrate and carmelize.

Also, I prefer natural light (daylight) when I photograph and I rarely use a flash. For the fig photos, I maintain manual "control" (it is already scaled) of the aperature, shutter speed and iso until the preview looks like what my naked eye sees. Auto focus, click, and that's it. So the colors are what I see from my perspective in my daylight and not 100% what the camera does.

Yes JD,this cultivar is undervalued, because there are a lots of them growing ,in the USA,but it lacks nothing, compared to others, and if the climate is hot and dry,it can win the contest too.
In my opinion the climate ,on east coast deteriorated,a lot since 2010,it became more rainy, yet it is resisting as good as it can.

JD i added three MvsB trees to my collection via cuttings. the cuttings were bought from a F4F member selling on ebay. to date the cuttings have grown into wonderful trees 3 foot tall now. I do have one loaded with figs already. I guess that root stimulater that i have been watering with really helps. this is another fig i cannot wait to try.

Great photos as usual JD.  MVS looks great.  I had one years ago but I managed to kill it somehow.  I may have to get my hands on one again.

Thanks all.

Herman,
I would love to taste MVSB, VdB, LSU Gold, as well as others like Socorro Black, Camuna Small Black, and Pananas Purple in a hot and dry climate, just to see how much better they might be without the humidity and heavy rains. I am sharing cuttings so maybe someone further west can execute the testing.

Joe,
Check your PMs.

Hi. Can somebody be kind enough to tell me what MVSB stands for. It look awfully tasty. Thanks.

If it ripens 1/3 of the remaining figs, then MVSB easily earns the title of Most Prolific of 2013 (in terms of # of figs). Approximately 4-5 figs ripen daily with 200+ figs on a seven foot tall tree with a six foot radius. I have two wishes for this tree. Wish 1. I wish that I liked it more. This could be a reality over the next few seasons. The problem is that that there are a few figs that we like better. Wish 2. I wish that more of them ripened at the same time. Then fig leather, fig jam, and fig preserves factor into making Wish 1 a reality.

I always love looking at your photographs, you should compile some of them into a book. Maybe have a portion of the profits go to the foundation?

How old is your tree, and how long has it been planted in ground? Do you remember how big it was when you transplanted it?

Nice pics.  My in ground MBVS is loaded.  Cant wait till they ripen.

I concur!  It is one of my best looking and best tasting fig trees! But if you think this one is great, wait till you try Marva Silka!  Picked several today.

Dennis its Mavra Sika if that's the one from Bass had one but discarded.
Not trying to be perfect as i often misspeel more simple words. ; )

Tamar,
Thank you for the encomium. I appreciate you looking and liking my photographs. It is fun. A book? Interesting idea. There are several forum members who take excellent photographs. Expanding your thought just a little bit, what do you think about a compendium of fig photos (best from several members) benefiting the Foundation?

I received the cuttings from Herman in May 2010 and it was grounded in 2011. It was about 24" tall.

Greg,
You will be pleased with MVSB. It is the only tree I have that can keep up...with the birds. Even if the birds gash a few, there are more waiting.

Dennis,
Thanks for the tickler that Mavra Sika is better than MVSB. Will you please post some pictures?

Another great looking picture and fig.  Thanks for sharing

goss

I can also vouch for Mavra Sika - to me though I think its really up to the person if they like it.  For me it has more of a berry taste to it which is quite unique.
