My 1st Airlayer - Success!

My RdB is getting so tall (48" of growth from cutting with no side branches), I decided I had to pinch the tip to stop it or it would get so tall that it'll bend over and break.  So I decided to try an air layer (attachement) near the top.  I'll post back here on the progress.

Good luck! I always found RDB to be an aggressive rooter with airlayers and cuttings.

Nice!
I've seen the airlayering usually done on the woody part of the stem and you did it on the green, still soft tissue.
Is it ok or woody is better?

Greenfig - I suspect the answer to your question has been covered on the forum previously but don't know where.  I'm looking forward to the answer.

James - I have heard it is best to cover the plastic with aluminum foil or some other light blocking material to keep light from hitting the roots.  I suspect you are doing this but just wanted to bring this up just in case.

Steve

Don't know about woody vs green, but we'll see.  If it doesn't work, no problem.  That's as tall as I want it for this year.  It needs to put out some branches now.  So if it doesn't work, I'll just cut that part off anyway.

I'm going to put foil on it.. just haven't gotten around to it yet and wanted to be able to easily monitor the moisture level in it for a few days.  I'm sure the roots haven't started yet.. lol

That's a great solution.  A win win
 I wish you  luck.

one of mine grew that tall and skinny, so I leaned its pot inside of another and now it is growing at a 45 degree angle and showind side growth. I leaned a bit more and it is almost to 70 degrees, and soon it will be at 90, when I will plant it sideways, hope to create a step over like those in Japan!  my RdB did not survive the winter...

I can't wait to talk to some of y'all about the different techniques for rooting and growing trees at the Big Fig Gig this weekend.  Am I the only one who thinks that's fun to say??  LOL

Oh, well, my question about woody vs. soft has been safely buried away ...

Woody will root faster but green will slightly harden off and root just fine. Just be sure to fully support both(especially green) so that the weight doesn't snap off the branch.

Ah! Cool, thanks, Jason.

Here's an RDB I just cut off a couple days ago.

Wow, a nice root development! I bought the same plastic containers for layering.
Do you like them? What soil did you use and how often did you water?

This RdB will make any recipient a happy person!

I hope mine does as well. Thanks!

For a reference, the RDB airlayer took 34 days. I set 8 of them on various trees and RDB was first to finish. It usually takes about 45 days for me to cut them. I like them a little root bound when I cut them off because there is less root disturbance when taking them out and there will be tons of roots to sustain the young plant.

Greenfig- This is my 3rd season using rooter pots in both sizes and I really like them. I injure the wood with a knife, put on the pot, and fill with wet Promix. I then wrap with aluminum foil. Airlayers that are upright rarely need water but ones that are on their sides sometimes needed a shot on in the top hole.

Jd- just be patient it will work out. The longer you leave it on the stronger and less shocked your new tree will be.

I figured it would take at least a month, but we should have plenty of warm weather here in North Texas.  It took these RdB's just over a month to root in the first place.  Since this air layer is on green wood, i didn't "injure" the wood, or use any rooting hormones.  Just used my normal potting mix.  If it works, great.  If not, it was an experience ;)

My Air Layer seems to have worked.  I cut it off and potted it yesterday.  As a reminder, it was on green wood a few inches above the transition from woody to green.  Started on 8/3 and cut on 9/8.   36 days total.   After potting, I forgot to water it right away and the small leaves at the top wilted a bit.  Watered it a couple of hours later, in the evening.  It's looking fine an perky this morning.  I have it in the shade today. (Ignore the writing on the pot.  This is RdB).

Great job!

Great job!  And I love the picture of your little helper!

Nice job on your air layers. Keep the pix and updates coming in.
