My 1st green cuttings started!

Hi everybody!

I just started my first  green cuttings, Ya'll keep your fingers crossed for me.

I removed all the figs and leafs and put them in Sprag Moss (damp)

Good luck with them!  Keep us posted!
Suzi

Thanks Suzi,

Will update everyone later!

Yes Cecil let us know good or bad cause its fun trying either way!

I will do that Martin, Thanks

If these green cuttings fail, I have an ace in the hole (Ace hole) not that other!!!

I can get some dormant cuttings when the tree goes dormant!

Hi everyone!

We have root initials on the green cuttings :-)

I hope to see roots soon!

More later

I've done many green cuttings. You can cut the leaves off or they will just wither and fall. My mix is 50/50 perlite vermiculite with enough ground coir to give it some body. I use transparent plastic drink cups. I keep them in the shade and keep them moist. That's pretty much it, just be patient.

I wonder how green cuttings would do if they just got stuck into the dirt in the shade close to the automatic sprinkler system.  Gonna try it now!

Suzi

Good luck!

It got to 104 F. here yesterday, so I don't think it would work around here!

Figluvah, I think my figs are used to some heat.  104 here yesterday, and will climb to 107 by Saturday.  There's not a lot of constant shade here, but I found a spot shaded by the Jacaranda tree, and buried one cutting, stripped of leaves, only the growth tip above ground.

This is just an experiment, but I'm giving it a whirl.

Nice to hear you already have root initials.  I was surprised at how quickly some of my green cuttings rooted.  Keep us posted!  Success stories are the best!

Suzi

Thanks Suzi

Will update later!

We were able to root 3 of the green cuttings so far, I cupped them this morning and put them in a tub with wet towel for humidity, I have the lid on with a crack in it trying to maintain the humidity to 70/75 %

Will update later

Thanks for the update. I've got some green cuttings going as well, in different stages. Mine are layered in barely moist mix in plastic trays. And then in a covered 'bin'. A few of my earliest ones have shown roots and were moved up into bands. A couple more from a later date are showing the first root nubs. And a few I started just this past week are still too new to check. I should probably take a few pictures...

I am nervous about them because of the trouble Pete recently has had, but they are all still looking healthy, and it's not that hot here now (mid 70s). Or humid.

Congrats Cecil!  Looks like you've got good success so far.  I just did the same thing (my first green cutting).

I left mine in the high humidity for 3 weeks, and took it out just last night.  A small (3") green cutting straight into wet sand w/ peat moss, then under white plastic bag for three weeks... it worked.  I opened it once each week just to check moisture and remove those leaves that had died, gave extra water twice. All leaves except one were gone, but that one stayed and now it's making new leaves.  It was outside in shade, w/ temps ranging 60's - 90's.

Though our techniques and climate were pretty different, same basic result... new trees from green cuttings.  Again congrats... it's fun getting these things to work, eh?

Hope you're staying cool in all the heat.

Way to go Gina & Mike

It better not get too hot on the cuttings I have them in a spare bedroom!

That AC is jus a whizzin!

Mine are inside the house as well. In the 'sun room' where I've done a lot of rooting of cuttings. It can get hot in there when it's hot outside, but it has lots of windows and gets lots of natural light. At 10:20 am it's now 72*F with a window open. No AC, but I'll use fans if necessary to keep the temps below 80 in there. Mottled sun won't shine in till later afternoon.

Hi Gina

Sounds like you have it going on, I would not argue that fact with you.

Good luck (but I don't think you need luck)

I sure as heck do.

I brought mine inside last night too when I took it out of the high humidity (white plastic bag cover).  It's 90's here outside today and past few days, and mid-70's inside.  If figured the heat would wilt it, with those small new roots being all it has.

But the 90's heat is welcome here... we don't get so much of it, as you southerners do.  (Unless it gets over 100... then it's just plain hot).

95* is cooler? egads.

Here on the Pacific coast, when it gets hot inland and the air rises, the cooler marine layer gets sucked in and keeps us cool. It is supposed to get to 70*F today. We have been in the mid 70*s lately with the warmer days in the low 80s.

As to green cuttings, I just moved 3 Scott's Black (thanks to a fellow forum member) into bands after they developed small roots. Still waiting on some others... they will develop roots when they are ready. I hope.

i wish it's 70's.. right now, my front porch where the 1 gal pots are is 100 degrees. good thing they are under the shade.
