My 2" cutting

I recently bought some individual cuttings and since they were long enough I took off an inch or 2 on each one as a backup. I scored the length of the small cutting and applied liquid hormone and placed the cutting horizontally score side down in the cups with perlite/vermiculite. The cutting is just barely covered near the surface just enough to keep it moist. I did this Dec. 13th. This morning I looked in my rooting bin and saw this cutting with the roots growing out the top (opposite side of the score) into the air. I carefully repotted it on its side so the roots will hopefully grow down and a shoot develops. This is a Hollier cutting btw. It was a nice surprise for sure! :)

Wow, is that ever quick.
I can just kinda see the score there, can you post a picture of your score so I can see how it's done?

That cutting was definitely in a happy place.  Very nice!

Actually Sammy I've repotted it and hate to disturb it now that I've buried the roots better. The score was about a bit less than a 1/4" wide and most of the length of the cutting. Not too deep just into the green layer just under the bark.

Strong work!  Is that a node there at the right, facing away from the camera for the shoot to grow from?  I think that fig plant will have a sense of humor.

Yes Bob it is. Hopefully see some green come out of there soon :)

..and just to clarify... there are 15 other 1 node cuttings that haven't done this... so could be just a fluke. This could be a cutting that was just ready to root.

Thanks Tyler ;)

Hollier is one of the BEST!  I have one rooted and double cupped.  The other is waiting for roots, but I wish I would have done what you did!  Great info!

Tyler,
Nice work, and good luck with that one.  I have 3 planted like that(horizontally), but nothing yet.  I am encouraged by your results.  What I've noticed on my other "regular" cuttings that I have scored, is that the scoring seems to stimulate root growth in the entire cutting, but in my case the roots come out everywhere except from the score.  But as I always say:  "Roots is roots" !!

You need a lot of humidity in the air for this to happen.

Vince, since I started scoring them about 10 days ago, I have noticed roots developing everywhere but where it is scored also.

On my 6" cuttings that are vertical the way I score is by doing upward angle cuts into the cutting rather than stripping away a piece of bark like I did on these short ones. When I move them from the small cups to larger pots I notice the roots are coming out in all directions not just from the wounded area. The hormone must activate that whole surface area and not just the wound for roots to develop. But like you say Vince... roots is roots!

Bob they are in a large clear plastic tub over the register so it is very humid in there.

Tyler

Nice surprise!

Tyler
Which liquid harmone are you using (in Canada)?
I have half dozen small jars of powdered one but they are old and must have lost potency by now being in the sun in the summer and -25C in the winter.

Nice job Tyler!  Looks good!

Ottawan - I think that Tyler is using Wilson's  Liquid, but he can confirm.  I know that I picked up some the other day at Canadian Tire, and am going to be giving it a try, with the scoring that everybody is talking about.

Tyler, make sure you update when a leaf or two develop.

Dave

Yes it is Wilsons Roots liquid gel. Home Depot has it too.

Thanks Tyler & Dave
I will buy it at Canadian Tire.
I get it free there.
That is how it looks like when using Canadian Tire MasterCard points. Probably they might have raised prices by 1%, and give 1% back by points to those who use Canadian Tire MasterCard. Normally I use these points for ProMix soil for figs. Everything is for figs and figs and more figs.... even for Brown Turkeys.

That looks great Tyler.

Here is a couple updated pics. I decided to take the cutting out of the 10oz cup since the roots have developed quite a bit and potted in a larger pot to give it some more room. No green growth yet but hopefully something will show soon.

That's cool Tyler, Thanks for sharing.

It probably won't leaf out until it has assimilated all the rooting hormones,
The rooting hormones are what's dominant in the cutting right now.
It has to then manufacture completely different hormones to leaf out, and may take it a while.
Especially if you super concentrated the rooting hormone mix.

Be aware that too strong a dose of any hormones and you can litterally burn out the cutting!
Growth and rooting hormones are the main ingredient in some weedkillers!
It litterally burns the plant up trying to grow and root it's self to death.

Hi Dan,

The hormone I used is shown a few posts above. Its a premixed gel. 0.4% IBA. I suppose roots with no growth is ok for now. I'd rather that over growth with no roots to support it lol.

tyler,
have your cuttings evr pushed a green growth?
I suppose I have a few hold-ups like this too.
One dates back to Oct 6/2013 and few others to Dec 02/2013. buds look dormant but hopefully alive.

damir

Hi Damir,

No that cutting eventually failed and did not produce a shoot. Dan was onto something there i think.

tyler,
there were several cuttings I gathered with large internodal distance and of rather unripened wood.
very light, floated even when vertically put in cup to ger re-hydrated.
tops of cuttings dried out, and were cut off, so practically only one node cutting remained.
since they did not root in 6 weeks I applied gel grow hormone
they would produce nice roots, but this was all they could do.
I discarded them after next 6 weeks of waiting.
today I read Dan's suggestion and it makes sense to me.
