My Belleclare Kalamata Black

Kalamata Black - was a propagated plant i purchased late in 2008  that came from parent bought at Belleclare Nuresery.
Badly damaged in wind storm a season ago when i found it the next morning lying completely sideways on rim of pot.
Thanks to person this came from also.

Good save, Martin.  That's a beautiful little tree.

I'm hoping to get some figs on the Black Kalamata I purchased from Gorgi in 09.  I don't recall there being any figs last year.  I'm also enjoying some Gooseberries right now and my three year old grapevines are loaded this year.  I think I'm suppose to thin them out though.

Hi Tmc,
many thanks for posting your Kalamata Black fig tree.
Please post the figs when they ripen i do the same if and when the time comes.

When Belleclare nursery closed were they also testing fig varieties to determine the type?  I was just wondering why there might be some uncertainty about the Kalamata Black fig variety.  Is the Black variety a relatively new find with the white being a more common one?  Did Belleclare discover this variety and were they the only source?  My Kalamata has a couple of side branches near the base that would be good candidates for air layering which I haven't tried yet and thought it would be a good place to start.

TMC2009,
here are "few" names from Greece,

Its my belief the names Kalamata Black and Kalamata White are just describing the color of the figs and not the true name just like some other figs called in this fashion.

No information was provided as to smyrna , common, or san pedro that i saw but may be out there .

Evidently the one Kalamata fig that UcDavis carries is of the white type and is a smyrna from what i have read on there site "S"  and this forum as well.

TMC please post if you start seeing your Kalamata Black drop figs .

A funny thin happened to me on the way to the colosseum Martin.  I decided to thin out the figs and video tape it and put it on youtube.  I left 15 figs on but later realized that I think I only left breba figs on.  I think some of my trees are confused because the smaller ones I brought in the cellar and they came out of domancy early.  When you look at the growth it is already looking like last years growth.  I had a Homer Simpson moment Doh!  I looked at the Encanto Farms Kalamata image and its a yellow fig so is the Bellaclare a different one?  Is the main crop always better than the breba crop?

I'll let you know what happens to the remaining figs

Well lol the description says
Kalamata Black  - medium black fig with dark red interior.
Then click picture and shows as a  darn yellow fig .  ; )
So i think its a mix up.

I have yet to taste a ripe fig from tree time will tell .

Indeed, I am curious about this also Martin.  F4F database shows green fig that looks like a smyrna or caprifig or something.

Im hoping to see a ripe fig this season from mine or another member that has same exact tree , there are a few out there but not many it seems.
I dont recall seeing ripe fig from them as of yet posted.

Mine in season of 2009 was baby had a few figs but fell.

Season 2010 it was heavily damaged in wind storm laying completely lateral on rim of pot all the figs dropped.

Seaon 2011 now it has put on decent growth and nice crop and a few now starting to drop,
time and more age will eventually tell me what this tree will do.

I move it and its still staked after the wind storm to this day, i just moved it again last night out of harms way as these summer rain storms are bringing strong winds, great light show though.

My Kalamata Black dropped all its figs.  They first turned yellowish then dropped.

Tmc mine did the same thing none ripe none swell and simply turn yellow then fall easily.
Same thing last season 2010 - but because of its root damage i thought that may have had something to do with that at the time.
Plant was too young in 2009 for the figs.

Im going to pull plant when it goes dormant and inspect the roots to see if it needs work or not then put in my own mix .
I still give it some seasons though to see whats what .

If you dont mind lets post again next year on this plant. ; )

Kalamata main crop?  I guess Kalamata Black has a breba and main crop.  I wasn't paying attention and then noticed a new set of figs growing.  Don't think there is enough time for them to ripen if they do ripen at all.  Maybe in a greenhouse environment.  Next year I will remove most of the brebas to get energy into main crop to see what happens.  Are there any other varieties where breba crop drops but good main crop are produced?

TMC in this picture these branches were all new growth fom this season bearing main crop figs that dropped.
I dont recall seeing breba figs on my plant although who knows perhaps next season plant does something .

That's right! I wasn't thinking.  Now I am confused.  When I thinned out the figs earlier I thought there were a couple on the old wood that I removed by accident.  Is this just another spurt of main crop growth?  Here are the pictures from July.  I have figs on lignified wood and some on green.

TMC , on some of my trees this season i let the ends of branches grow without pruning them . In short yes they keep growing and putting on figs , course they will not ripen in my yard but i wanted some of these trees to continue without my intervention for other reasons.

If you see figs on branches that were there from last season thats breba.
If there there on wood that seasoned "this year " meaning the wood looks like last year cause of its color thats main crop.
Somtimes the plants grow fast and parts of the wood looks like last years cause of its color .

Bump of Kalamata observations from last year

Thanks Tom if your fall or get ripe please post either way thanks a lot.
