I dug out this tree from a yard in Niagara falls last year with 2 others and this is the first fig I have tried from it . It was awesome . It has many  leaf shapes with the newest being 5 lobed & thin to the oldest being less lobed.
Might it be Barnisotte ? It has a drop of honey on the eye .

John, They say the beauty is skin deep but ugly is all the way through. Well this fig is just the opposite. Ugly pock marked skin but juicy and delicious looking all the way through.  Nice find, looks like it should taste great.

Hey John, that fig sure looks good is that one of the ones you got last year? Are you gonna hit niagara falls this fall again? Seems those fig trees that we talked about are still up for grabs and they are 15 years old I believe.

Ruben - I live in Toronto and have never mailed cuttings . Is it possible to get them over the border ? What is the packaging procedure ?
Gene - Yea its another keeper .
Nelson - Yes this is one of the 3 that I got from Niagara Falls last fall . Do you have any idea what it might be ? I might have a potted sucker if you are inerested . I tried rooting a bunch of cuttings last winter , and it doesnt root easily . Do you know anything about those trees in Niagara that are for sale ?

Hey John, Oh Potted sucker would be great:) I have no clue what it is and dont have anything in my collection that has that leaf variation does indeed look like a unique fig. I wrote the guy's phone # somewhere they are all Italian 2 Green 2 Purple but all 4 are different if im not mistaken. Ill give you a call a bit later today have a few things for you.

Hey Ruben ,

I clicked on the link to Dave's forum under your name and looked through some of your rooting techniques . Very impressive indeed . You should start a thread . Such  concentrated root growth along those scraped areas . I often get roots popping up all over the cutting .

others are doing great. just put them outdoors in full sun last week
they didnt grow too much but they look good

Thanks for checking out my link! I need to update and add new varieties. You're right, I should start a thread to show my results. I have been studying the effect for a long time now and have my own convictions. Thanks again!

BTW, how does your fig compare to Condit's description of Barnissotte? I see some similarities, but several differences.

John you got a superior fig there.
It is not Barnisotte but also is not Brown Turkey.
I have many cultivars,but nothing exactly like thi9s one.
So it is own cultivar.
I wonder how it does if it get ripe while during rainy days.
Here, that is the test.
To ripe and be edible during heavy rain.
I have similar figs to yours:Maltese Falcon,Kathleen Black,but they are much darker in color,on outside.
Burnisotte black is more turbinate with thinner neck.
And the leaves are different.Here is the correct Barnisotte,from UCD.
Also would like to know if you see any pink Leaf stems,or pink growing tips.
The exterior  color of your fig fruits can be different in a southern climate and so the outside color of your fruits can't be taken as fact.
I am puzzled to Id this fig,but if it resist rain,it is valuable.

It was raining all day Monday and on Wednesday I picked a fig from this tree. It's raining half the day Wednesday as well .
I also picked a kadota fig . The kadota flavor was very bland and watery with no sweetness to speak of . Amazingly this fig is full of flavor and very sweet and not watery . It is like it's not affected .The weather has been cool too yet the figs seem to all be ripening on this tree . Absolutely no splitting at the eye . The skin is cracking ( not splitting open ) just as before but not due to rain .
Took some photos but having problems with photobucket not loading .Will try again tomorrow .

After having 2 full and 1 half day of rain out of 5 last week ,I picked a few figs and they were consistently sweet and flavourful with no splitting at all .
The other thing I have noticed with this fig is that it keeps dripping a thick goopy honeylike syrup . Not just a drop at the eye like my other figs . I mean lots of sweet clear super thick syrup running down leaves and branches .

Not watery after maturing during days of rain .


This drop of honey will hang for hours then drip and drip for days till ripe


Look at the syrup on the leaf below the fig


Its been raining and no splitting .

Great looking fig!  I don't know what it is but I think it would be a red or black fig in my climate.

i have two tiny cuttings in 1 gal container still hanging in there. i hope they grow well this year. come to think of it, both Niagara Black, and Socorro Black are very small in 1 gal. i think it's due to cutting off my fertilizer around mid july and i rooted them afterward. i'll have to remember to pump fertilizers in them...

I have been calling this fig Niagara Black since this thread .
So if you search that name you can find more pics and info .
I think if you forum search the word Niagara you get better results .
