what are they?

i call them dottato but who knows? a lot of people in Seattle grow these and I have heard them called different things. They don't freeze back, and bear in late july early august.

Desert King?

Hi madelaine
Unusual color, any cuttings available?
Vito

Wow, never seen figs that look like that, I was thinking Desert King to.   They look like a cross between an avocado and a fig.

How do they look inside?

Not a Desert King shape. "Ribbing" is not characteristic of DK either.

they are red inside. here they are.  I will definitely have cuttings this spring. We cut down the major trunk of the tree and I will have countless shoots coming up.

Look at Kiwi Bob's website.  He compares different figs grown up in the Puget Sound area.  Looks a lot like the Desert King photos on his website.

Desert King looks different when grown down here in Arizona.  In my experience it ripens much more yellow in color down here.

A couple of Jon's photos for Desert King also show some ribbing.

According to this website, this fig is most like "unknown variety" or Peter's honey.  The figs are pretty big and they are so incredibly sweet.

It looks like my potted fig (Melanzana) is going to have a ripe fig in a couple days!

Whatever it is, if it does well for you and you like it that's all that matters.  Congrats on finding a good fig for your area.

my biggest problem with this fig is that it wants to be 30 feet tall. its habit is too upright.

Mimi, the huge growth is due to the top pruning you are doing. I visited a tree of that variety in West Seattle. Perhaps the most graceful fig tree I ever saw. the guy does not prune and the branches arch cascading down. I want a sucker, I want a tree... I want to trade one of mine for yours.

oh but dear Grasa, when i did not prune the tree it got to be 3 stories tall!  The birds ate the figs that were 30 feet in the air and
defecated all over the figs that i could reach. It was disgusting.

Then i cut it down and it grew right back up.
I have many fig sticks for you dear.

The fruit looks a lot like the Desert King I have growing in my yard (also Seattle area). Enjoy the tree - they are a great treat.

it is not desert king. someone reminded me it could be Kadota/Dottata.    The leaves are wrong for desert king.

sunday 014.jpg greenfig3.jpg   the first photo shows the tree's structure in 2005, before I ever pruned it. It continued to get taller and taller, until we could no longer get anywhere near the top of the tree.
The next picture shows right after it was pruned. more upward growth.

The original tree was also an upright tree, its owner complained about that.

Nice. Looks like a winner to me. How's the taste?

Mimi, here, these are the fruits that got me hunting for whom own the tree. they call it Kadota... the figs look a lot like yours, don't they?

I got cuttings from someone and they called the fig Strawberry Kadota.  Is there such a thing?  Or is it the Kadota with the strawberry added on because it's such a bright red inside?

very nice looking fig! hmmmmm, I need to make a trip to Seattle!

Sarah, I guess there is a Kadota with red pulp ( hense strawberry) and one with amber...
